Steering Wheel: Service and Repair
1. Place front wheels in the straight ahead position, then disconnect battery ground cable.2. Pry out carefully or pull off horn pad, then remove steering wheel retaining nut and spring washer. Gently pry horn pad buttons from front of horn pad, if equipped, then disconnect electrical connectors.
3. Mark steering wheel in relation to steering spindle, then remove steering wheel.
4. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. On Cabriolet, Golf, GTI, Jetta and Scirocco models, ensure wheels are in straight ahead position and canceling lug points to the left prior to installing wheel.
b. On Fox models, ensure wheels are in straight ahead position and signal lever is in neutral position prior to installing wheel.
c. On Corrado, Passat and Vanagon models, ensure wheels are in straight ahead position prior to installing wheel.
d. On all models, align index marks made during removal.
e. Torque steering wheel retaining nut to 29 ft. lbs. on Corrado, Golf, GTI, Jetta and Passat models and 36 ft. lbs. on Cabriolet, Fox, Scirocco and Vanagon models.
