Shift Linkage: Adjustments

NOTE: To obtain a correct gearshift adjustment, shift linkage should be operating satisfactorily, shift/selector cable mounting components and cable boots should be in satisfactory condition, shift cables should be operating smoothly and transmission and clutch should be in satisfactory condition.

ADJUSTING
1. Place gearshift lever in neutral, then remove the gearshift lever knob and shift boot.
2. Remove balance weight.

Shift Cables:




3. Loosen bolt "A" and nut "B" until operating cables move freely in centering holes.

Gearshift Mechanism:




4. Loosen bolt "C".
5. Install shift lever gauge 319 or equivalent.
6. Pivot locating pin (for attaching gauge) under bearing plate, then tighten nut "D".
7. Press gearshift lever into left detent of slide.
8. Press gearshift lever with slide to left stop (direction of arrow) and tighten slide with bolt "E".

Gearshift Mechanism:




9. Move gearshift lever to right detent (direction of arrow).
10. Tighten bolt "C".

Wedge Tool And Pin:




11. Install wedge and locating pin.
12. Push wedge in between gearshift lever and gearshift cover, until there is no play.

CAUTION: Wedge must not raise the transmission gearshift lever.

13. Attach operating cables in this position, checking position of wedge.
14. Remove wedge and pin.
15. Remove shift lever gauge.

FUNCTIONAL CHECK
1. Put transmission in neutral.
2. Gearshift lever tensioned toward 3rd gear/4th gear track.
3. Depress the clutch pedal and start the engine.
4. Wait approximately 3-6 seconds, to allow transmission input shaft to come to a standstill.
5. Select each gear several times, checking all gears. Pay particular attention to the operation of the reverse gear pawl.
6. If any gear binds or drags, check transmission rod travel as follows:

a. Shift into 1st gear.

b. Press shift lever to left, to stop, then release. At the same time observe the selector shaft on the transmission. This will require the help of a second technician.

Selector Shaft:




7. Rod must travel approx. 1.0 mm (3/64 in.) in the direction of the arrow, when activating the shift lever. If it does not:

a. Disengage 1st gear

Selector Cable:




b. Loosen nut "A" at selector cable mounting lug. Gate selector cable has some play at mounting due to transfer elements. Minimal play at mounting is normal.
c. Reposition cable/lug slightly, toward instrument panel.
d. Tighten nut "A" in this position.
e. Selector cable play will be increased.

8. Install shift boot assembly and gearshift lever knob.
