Spiral Spring Removing/Installing


Spiral spring for steering column assembly, removing/installing


CAUTION

The turning range for an installed spiral spring is approximately four turns to the left or right. To prevent post-installation damage, keep the steering position centered, i.e., four turns from the "stop," in either direction, and ensure that the front wheels remain straight ahead throughout this procedure.

Removing

^ disconnect battery ground cable


CAUTION

Wait 20 minutes while airbag system capacitor discharges, before removing airbag unit.

^ remove airbag unit, as described previously in this Repair Group
^ remove steering wheel, as described previously in this Repair Group
^ remove knee bar panel
^ remove steering column lower trim





^ disconnect wiring connectors 1 and 2 (arrows)





^ loosen retaining screws (arrows)
^ remove spiral spring assembly from column





Note

Replacement spring assemblies from the Parts Department include a "locking piece" (arrow), designed to lock the assembly in its center position, prior to installation. The locking piece must be removed, before installing a new spring assembly.

Installation

^ center spiral spring (four turns from the "stop" in either direction)
^ install spiral spring assembly in reverse order of removal
