Fault Memory, Accessing/Erasing


Airbag system fault memory, accessing/ erasing

Preliminary steps

^ verify that vehicle's electrical system is operating within normal voltage range
^ allow vehicle to idle in Neutral, with parking brake fully applied, to ensure that all faults are stored
^ remove shift linkage cover, to access the diagnostic connector

Diagnostic tester VAG 1551, connecting

^ switch ignition OFF
^ connect VAG 1551/1 diagnostic cable lead to diagnostic tester VAG 1551
^ connect branched end of diagnostic cable VAG 1551/1 to diagnostic connectors in vehicle as follows:





^ black test connector (ground/voltage supply) to black connector A in vehicle
^ white test connector (carrying code transmission) to red connector B in vehicle
^ blue test connector - no connection necessary


^ watch for display readout
^ operating modes 1. and 2. appear alternately

Note

If no display appears, check voltage supply to the VAG 1551. A minimum of 10 volts from the battery is needed. If necessary, recharge the battery.


VAG 1551 fault memory, accessing

^ press "PRINT" button for a complete printout of functions
^ light will go on

^ press button "1" to access "Rapid Data Transmission" operating mode
^ switch ignition ON

Insert adress word XX


^ press buttons "5" and "7" to insert address word, "Airbag Golf Cabriolet"
^ press "Q" button to enter data

^ control unit serial number appears on display (example below)

Note

If the message below appears:


Control unit does not answer HELP


^ press "HELP" button for printout of possible causes
^ correct any problems before proceeding
^ repeat address word "57" (Airbag Golf Cabriolet)
^ press "Q" button again to enter data
^ press "Right Arrow" button
^ display below will appear

^ press buttons "0" and "2," to access fault memory
^ press "Q" button to enter data

02 check fault memory


^ the number of faults stored, if any, appears on
^ display (examples below)


^ press "Right Arrow" button
^ stored faults are displayed in sequence and printed out

^ press "Right Arrow" button, after last fault is displayed/ printed


2 faults recognized

or:

No faults recognized


^ message below will appear

^ diagnose and correct airbag system faults
^ use charts in troubleshooting section.

^ access fault memory by pressing "0" and "2" buttons
^ press "Right Arrow" button
^ display at left appears

^ press buttons "0" and "5" to select "Erase fault memory"

^ press "Q" button to enter data
