Most rear wheel bearing failures occur after repairs to the rear brakes/wheel bearings.
The following points MUST be noted when repairing rear axle brakes/bearings:
Wheel bearings, sealing
Moisture will enter the wheel bearing and cause damage if not sealed properly.

Wheel bearings, cleaning
Taper roller bearings must NOT be washed. Bearings that will be reused must be carefully protected from dirt and impurities when removed. If necessary, add additional wheel bearing grease.
Wheel bearings, pairing
New taper roller bearings must only be installed in pairs, i.e. bearing outer race and bearing inner race with rollers must be from same manufacturer.
Wheel bearings, adjusting
- tighten nut securely while turning wheel so bearing does not jam
- adjust nut so thrust washer can be moved slightly using finger pressure against a screwdriver (Do not twist or pry screwdriver)
