- The heating and ventilation controls are located in the center of the dashboard. The two upper levers control air distribution by regulating the opening of the defrost and footwell outlets. Air flow through dashboard vents can be controlled by operating the vents individually.

- A rotary switch is used to operate the fresh air blower at three different speed settings. The bottom lever is used to control the interior temperature.

- The VW Fox uses a blend type system for temperature regulation. The temperature control lever operates the temperature regulation flap via a cable. This flap regulates the temperature by controlling the amount of air that is passed through the heat exchanger.

- This system has the advantage of reacting instantly to changes in the control settings. Heater output also remains less affected by changes in engine or vehicle speed.

- A heater valve is used to control the flow of engine coolant to the heat exchanger. The heater valve is vacuum operated. A separate vacuum switch is located in the ventilation control assembly to operate the heater valve.

- The valve is normally open and allows engine coolant to flow through the heat exchanger.

- The interior temperature is controlled by regulating the amount of air which passes through the heat exchanger. However, when the temperature control lever is moved almost fully to the left (no heating desired) the switch will open and supply vacuum. This will close the heater valve.
