Jetta models with gasoline engine/5-speed transmission now have a self-adjusting clutch cable. This clutch cable incorporates an adjustment mechanism on the transmission side of the cable which automatically adjusts to compensate for normal clutch disc wear.

Work sequence
- depress clutch pedal completely and release several times
- compress spring (beneath boot at top of adjustment mechanism) and remove cable attachment parts at release lever
- unhook cable eye from pedal
- remove cable

Work sequence
- push cable through front panel
- hook cable eye onto pedal
- compress spring on adjuster mechanism and have 2nd mechanic pull cable down and install attachment parts at release lever
Note
Replacement cables may have the spring on the adjustment mechanism compressed and held by a strap for ease of installation. Remove the strap after the cable is installed. For installation without strap, the spring will have to be compressed during installation.

CAUTION
Do not open automatic adjustment mechanism.
