MODEL(S):

Jetta, 1985
SUBJECT:

Cracking noise - dashboard

Temperature changes at the defroster outlets can cause a cracking noise due to expansion and contraction of the plastics.

Determine if the noise is caused by the outlets by checking as follows:

^ Run the engine to operating temperature.

^ Set the temperature and distribution control levers to the right for maximum defrost. A cracking noise in the dashboard may be heard.

^ Set the temperature control lever to the full left (A/C mode). The same cracking noise may be heard as the defroster outlets cool down.

^ In severe cases, replace the dashboard. Replacement dashboards have polyethylene installed between the dashboard and the defrost vents. The Part Number is unchanged.

Production Change:
Polyethylene installed between dashboard and defrost vents as of Feb. 1985,
VIN: 16FW 407600.

Material change for defrost outlets as of Feb. 1986, VIN: 16FW 444183.
