GROUP

48

NUMBER

89-02 July 31, 1989

MODEL(S):

Golf/Jetta from 1985 m.y.

Beginning in August 1988, steering wheels with modified inner splines were introduced into production. Accurate adjustment of the steering wheel is improved due to an increased number of splines on the new wheel.

The steering column is unchanged except for the addition of a short splined adapter sleeve pressed on to the splines of the steering column.

Beginning in January 1989, the short splined adapter sleeve was replaced in production by a longer sleeve. The shorter sleeve remains available as a service part.

Steering column with short adapter sleeve

1 Washer 3 mm thick - P/N N 904 485.01

2 Splined adapter sleeve (short) P/N 191 419 514 A

3 Washer

4 Compression spring

5 Contact ring

6 Thrust ring

Steering column with long adapter sleeve

1 Splined adapter sleeve (long) P/N 191 419 514

2 Compression spring

3 Thrust ring

Note

The long adapter sleeve presses directly on the compression spring so the washer and contact ring (3 and 5 in Fig. 48-605) are eliminated.

Along with the introduction of the longer adapter sleeve, the upper steering column diameter changed:

^ dimension a = 20 mm (earlier version) 22 mm (later version)

Only the 22 mm steering column will be available as a replacement part after supplies of the 20 mm column are depleted.
