During the 1984 model year, the front suspension on production vehicles was changed to include modified outer CV joints and wheel bearing housings.
New and old version parts must NOT be used interchangeably for the following reasons:
^ wheel bearing would not be adequately protected from dirt
^ CV joint would tighten against wheel bearing housing and be unable to turn
CAUTION
Install either new or old version parts during repairs but ensure that wheel bearing housing and outer CV joints are of the same type.

Outer CV joint, new type
^ a = 64 mm (2.52 in.)
^ collar (arrow)
Outer CV joint, old type
^ a = 62 mm (2.44 in.)
^ collar with two wide grooves or sheet metal ring (arrow)
Wheel bearing housing
New type
^ b = 68 mm (2.67 in.)
^ small lug on strut arm (arrow)
Old type
^ b = 66 mm (2.59 in.)
^ no identification mark
