Transmission, Checking
Transmission, checking
Before commencing repair work on the automatic transmission, the exact malfunction cause should be determined as exactly as possible using the diagnostic equipment available.
Note: The automatic transmission is only to be checked as described in the "Troubleshooting - Power transmission" binder if the cause of the damage cannot be located and repaired after the "vehicle self-diagnosis" has been performed in consideration of engine and ATF-level.

Conditions for performing check
^ DTC memory checked
When the DTC memory is checked, the following display should appear:
"No malfunction recognized!"
^ ATF level OK
^ If possible, the main pressure test should be performed on a rolling road.
Special tools and equipment
^ VAG 1331 Torque wrench
^ VAG 1702 Automatic transmission tester
^ Remove noise insulation tray.
^ Remove bolt -arrow- for main pressure hole. Always replace bolt.
^ Connect pressure tester VAG 1702 and tighten thumb screw.
^ Start engine.
^ Bleed pressure tester VAG 1702. To do this, loosen thumb screw and tighten when bleeding is complete.
^ Switch off engine.
^ Measure ATF temperature.
If VAS5051 is used to measure ATF temperature:
Connecting vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051
^ Select "08 - read measured value blocks" on the touch screen.
^ Select display group 005 via "Measured value block" and "Change display group number".
The first display zone shows the ATF temperature.
^ Start engine.
^ Allow ATF temperature to rise to 60°C.
^ Measure main pressure at idle speed using VAG 1702.
If VAG 1551 is used to measure ATF temperature:
The following detailed test procedures are described for scan tool VAG 1551.
^ Connect scan tool VAG 1551 and enter address word "02 Transmission electronics" and advance until "Select function XX" is indicated on display.
Indicated on display:
^ Press keys O and 8. (The function "Read measured value block" is selected with 08.)
Indicated on display:
^ Confirm entry with key Q.
Indicated on display:
^ Press keys 0 0 5. (005 selects the "Display group number 005".)
^ Confirm entry with key Q.
Indicated on display:
The first display zone shows the ATF temperature.
^ Start engine.
^ Allow ATF temperature to rise to 60°C.
^ Measure main pressure at idle speed using VAG 1702.
Main pressure specifications at idle
If there are deviations from the prescribed values, the chart notes possible causes:
^ Switch off engine.
Solenoid valve connector -arrow-.
^ Press fuse together and pull off connector.
^ Start engine.
^ Measure main pressure at 2000 RPM.
Main pressure specifications at 2000 RPM
^ If possible, the main pressure test should be performed on a rolling road.
If there are deviations from the prescribed values, the following could be the cause:
After test:
^ Disconnect pressure tester VAG 1702.
^ Install new bolt for main pressure hole and tighten.
Torque setting bolt: 12 Nm
^ Install solenoid valve connector.
^ Once connector has been installed, check and erase DTC memory.
^ If work has been carried out using tester VAS 5051, select diagnostic function "05 - Erasing DTC memory" within the vehicle On Board Diagnostic (OBD) and confirm by pressing "OK".
^ Install noise insulation tray.
