Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level, checking and topping off

Special tools and equipment





^ VAG 1551/1 Diagnosis cable
VW ATF is obtainable as a spare part.
Container size 1.0 ltr. -Part No. G 052162 A2





^ If the ATF level is checked the seal -arrow- on the ATF level plug must always be replaced.

ATF level, checking

Conditions for performing check
^ Fuse OK.
^ The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V.
^ Ground connections on engine, transmission and body OK.
^ All electrical consumers must be switched off
^ Transmission not emergency running, ATF temperature not above approximately 30°C
^ Vehicle level
^ Selector lever in position "P"





^ Secure reservoir of ATF filling system VAG 1924 to vehicle.
^ Remove noise insulation tray.

Connecting diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051

^ Select "08 - read measured value blocks" on the touch screen.
^ Select display group 005 via "Measured value block" and "Change display group number".

The first display zone shows the ATF temperature.

The ATF temperature must not be more than approximately 30°C at the start of test.

The following detailed test procedures are described for scan tool VAG 1551.
^ Connect scan tool VAG 1551 and enter address word "02 Transmission electronics" and advance until "Select function XX" is indicated on display.

Measure ATF temperature in measured value block:





Indicated on display:
^ Press keys O and 8. (The function "Read measured value block" is selected with 08.)





Indicated on display:
^ Confirm entry with key Q.





Indicated on display:
^ Press keys 0 0 5. (005 selects the "Display group number 005".)
^ Confirm entry with key Q.





Indicated on display:

The first display zone shows the ATF temperature.

The ATF temperature must not be more than approximately 30°C at the start of test.
^ Start engine.
^ Raise vehicle.
^ Place drip tray under the transmission.
^ Bring ATF to test temperature.

Test temperature: 35°C to 45°C





^ Remove ATF level plug from the oil pan.





The ATF present in the overflow pipe (arrow 2) runs out.

ATF drips out of hole:

ATF need not be topped off.
^ Install new seal (arrow 1 ) to plug and tighten to 15 Nm. Here with is the ATF check completed.

Sealing plug (arrow 3) and cap (arrow 4) remain closed.

If only the ATF present in the overflow pipe runs out of hole:
^ Top off ATF


ATF, topping off





^ Pry off plug securing cap -arrow- with a screwdriver. The cap locking device will be destroyed, when doing this therefore always replace cap.
^ Pull plug out of filler pipe.

Note: On some transmissions a cap with a spring is installed. This cap can be used again.





^ Fill with ATF using VAG 1924 until ATF runs out of level hole.

Note: An insufficient ATF filling as well as filing to excess affects the function of the transmission.





^ Install new seal -arrow 1- to plug and tighten, - 15 Nm - item 1 .
^ Install sealing plug on filler pipe until the spring retainer lock locates, or
^ Install plug on filler pipe and secure with a new cap -arrow 2-.
^ Lock cap.

Note:

Always replace cap. The cap secures the sealing plug.
