Definitions
These explanations refer only to this assembly group: Automatic transmission 01 P - from 01.95. The definitions are not necessarily valid in general.
ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)
transmission fluid for automatic transmission
ATF level
The "level" of ATF in transmission when full.
Brakes
These hold certain rotating parts in the transmission. The automatic transmission 01 P -from 01.95 has two multi-plate brakes. They differ to the clutches in that the brakes are supported on the transmission housing.
Torque converter
Transfers the engine torque to the automatic transmission and acts as a drive-away clutch. The torque converter also includes the lock-up clutch.
On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
The capability of the control module: to recognize malfunctions,
to react to malfunctions,
to store DTCs,
to register DTCs and make them available in the measured value block.
Performing On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
Connecting vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 in order, for example, to check the DTC memory or read the measured value block.
Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051
Replaces and supplements all functions that were performed previously using scan tools V.A.G 1551 or V.A.G 1552.
Transmission vehicle speed sensor (VSS) -G38-
The sensor records the speed of the large sun-wheel in the planetary transmission and transmits it to the automatic transmission control module.
Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) -G68-
The sensor records the speed of the output gear and transmits it to the automatic transmission control module (not to the speedometer).
Clutches
Together with the brakes, they engage the individual gears.
Wiring
Routing of electrical wiring and components in vehicle.
Shift Lock Solenoid -N110-
Located in the selector mechanism close to the selector lever. Prevents movement (involuntary) of the selector lever from positions "P" and "N" as long as the brake pedal is not depressed.
Solenoid valves
Open and close the oil channels to the clutches and brakes.
Multi-Function transmission range (TR) switch -F125-
Electrical switch with various tasks.
Parking lock
The parking lock gear is mechanically locked when the vehicle is stationary and prevents the vehicle from rolling (involuntarily).
Planetary transmission
Is a mechanical component of the automatic transmission and is switched via the clutches and brakes without loss of power.
Valve body
Located on the bottom of the transmission and is enclosed in the ATF pan. Its valves regulate the pressure and distribute it via the oil channels to the switch elements (clutches and brakes).
Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-
The electronic control module defines the shift points. The function of the transmission is monitored via the On Board Diagnostic (OBD). If a component or sensor fails, an emergency running program ensures the vehicle can still be driven.
TCC (Torque converter lock-up clutch)
Transfers the engine torque mechanically to the transmission.
Ignition key withdrawal lock
Ensures that the ignition key can only be withdrawn when park position is selected and in addition mechanically locks the selector lever in this position.
