Steering Column Tube With Steering Column
Special Tools and Equipment
^ VAG1331 torque wrench
^ VAG1332 torque wrench
Removing
^ Remove airbag unit (only for vehicles with airbag).
^ Remove steering wheel.
Vehicles with knee bar
^ Pry off trim -1- from left side.
^ Remove hex nuts and hex bolts -2- (2 pieces) and pull off driver's side knee bar
Continuation for all vehicles
^ Remove trim below steering column switch.
^ Remove trim above steering column switch
^ Remove left trim below instrument panel.
Vehicles with ESP
^ Remove steering angle sensor.
Continuation for all vehicles
^ Disconnect connector -1- from steering column by pulling in direction of arrow.
^ Disconnect harness connectors to signal and windshield wiper switch.
^ Remove mounting bolts (arrows).
^ Disconnect signal and windshield wiper switch from steering column.
^ Disconnect harness connector from steering lock housing
^ Loosen trim -1-.
^ Loosen console for footwell duct -2- and remove.
^ Remove bolt from universal joint.
^ Disconnect universal joint from intermediate steering shaft at bottom.
^ Remove bracket -1-, if installed and brace -2- from steering column tube -5-.
^ Unclip cable channel -3-.
^ Unbolt upper mounting bolt -4- for steering column tube.
^ Unbolt lower bolt for steering column tube to mounting bracket/pedal assembly.
^ Remove steering column tube with steering column.
Installing
Installation is the reverse of removal.
Tightening torques
Steering wheel to steering column: 67 Nm
Universal joint to steering shaft: 30 Nm and turn an additional 90°
Always replace bolt with nut
Upper mounting bolt for steering column tube: 50 Nm
Lower mounting bolt for steering column tube: 23 Nm
