Readiness Code, Generating

Special tools and equipment

- VAG 1551 scan Tool (or VAG 1552 mobile scan tool) with VAG 1551/3B cable

Test requirements







- All fuses must be OK.
- For vehicles with automatic transmission, selector lever must be in -P- or -N-.
- Parking brake must be engaged or else daylight driving lights will be switched on.
- All electrical consumers like, for example, lights and rear window heating must be switched off.
- Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.
- Coolant temperature must be at least 80 °C, See Display group 04, display field 3
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) less than 60 °C See Display group 04, display field 4
- Three-way Catalytic Converter (TWC) temperature must be at least 350 °C See Display group 34, display field 2

Procedure
- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool (VAG 1552). Then switch ignition on and select the Engine Control Module (ECM) using address word 01
connecting scan tool and selecting ECM. Refer to Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks. Scan Tool Testing and Procedures

Work step 1: Check DTC Memory

Indicated on display:

- Press buttons -0- and -2- to select "Check DTC Memory" function 02. Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Number of stored DTCs or "No DTC recognized" will be indicated on display.


X malfunctions recognized!


If a DTC is stored:
- Repair malfunctions that were printed out using DTC table: SAE P0-Codes, SAE P1-Codes. P Code Charts

If no DTCs are stored:
- Press the -> button.

Work step 2: Erase DTC Memory

Indicated on display:

- Press buttons -0- and -5- to select "Erase DTC Memory" function 05. Press -Q- button to confirm input.


NOTE: The readiness code is reset/erased every time DTC memory is erased.

NOTE: If ignition was switched off between the steps "Check DTC memory" and "Erase DTC memory", DTC memory will not be erased.

Work step 3: Adapt Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- to Engine Control Module (ECM)

Work step 4: Diagnostic of tank seal


NOTE: Perform this work step with vehicle stationary and running at idle.


- Press -2-, -0- and -2- for the function "display group number 202", and then press Q to exit from input mode.

- Continue to let engine run at idle speed until display field 4 indicates the following after approx. 30 seconds. Specification: x x x x x 1 0 0 is indicated.


NOTE: During this work step, the diagnostic pump can start repeated diagnostic procedures until specified value is obtained, depending on how much fuel is in fuel tank. If a diagnostic time of 3 minutes is exceeded, there may be a leak that has not resulted in a DTC entry.


If indications do not resemble description:
- Press the -> button.
- Check DTC memory.

If indications resemble description:
- Press button -3- (VAG 1551) or up-arrow button (VAG 1552).


NOTE:
- Work steps 5 and 6 must be performed during a road test.
- Engine must not be shut off for further work procedures following road test.
- For some work steps, it is possible that a subsequent diagnostic has already been completed successfully in the background. In this case, continue with the next work step.

Work step 5: Diagnostic of knock control

Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = display fields)

- Accelerate vehicle in 1st gear until an engine speed of approx. 3000 RPM is reached.
- Let engine run briefly at approx. 3000 RPM until display field 4 indicates Specification: x x x x 1 0 0 is indicated.

If indications do not resemble description:
- Press the -> button.
- Check DTC memory.

If indications resemble description:
- Press button -3- (VAG 1551) or up-arrow button (VAG 1552).

Work step 6: Diagnostic of vehicle speed

Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = display fields)

- Accelerate vehicle until an engine speed of more than 3000 RPM is reached.
- Then abruptly close throttle valve. Specified value following deceleration mode in Display field 4: x x x x x 1 0 0


NOTE: The indication "deceleration" must be obtained once for approx. three seconds. Drive in 1st gear for this.


If indications do not resemble description:
- Press the -> button.
- Check DTC memory.

If indications resemble description:
- Press button -3- (VAG 1551) or up-arrow button (VAG 1552).

Work step 7: Diagnostic of oxygen sensor heating before Three-way Catalytic Converter (TWC)


NOTE: Work steps 7 through 18 can be performed with gas and brake pedal completely depressed once work steps are completed successfully.


- Let engine run at idle.

Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = display fields)

Engine speed will be raised to about 2300 RPM by the Engine Control Module (ECM).

If indications do not resemble description:

- Check DTC memory.

If indications resemble description:
- Press -C- button.

Work step 8: Diagnostic position of intake camshaft to crankshaft

If indications do not resemble description:
- Press the -> button.


NOTE: It is possible that the Three-way Catalytic Converter (TWC) is no longer at the required temperature for this work step. Switch to the mode "Read Measuring Value Block" and into display group 046. Raise Three-way Catalytic Converter (TWC) temperature to at least 350 °C via an engine speed of approx. 3500 RPM and repeat this work step.


- Check DTC memory.

If indications resemble description:
- Press -C- button.

Work step 13: Diagnostic of fuel supply system (partial throttle)
