Oil Pressure Sender: Testing and Inspection
Oil pressure and oil pressure switch, checking
Special tools and equipment
- VAG1342 compression tester
- VAG1342/14 adapter
- VAG1527B voltage tester
- VAG1594A connector test kit
Test requirements
- Engine oil level OK, checking
- Oil Pressure Warning Light -K3- must light up for approximately 3 seconds when ignition is switched on.
- Oil temperature at least 80 °C (radiator fan must start up once)
Oil pressure switch, checking
- Remove noise insulation pan
- Remove oil pressure switch F1 and install in tester.
- Thread VAG1342 oil pressure gauge with VAG1342/14 adapter into oil filter bracket instead of oil pressure switch.
Note:
- Note installation position of adapter: The cone shaped adapter connection piece is connected to the pressure hose of the tester via a threaded connection.
- Connect brown wire of tester to Ground (GND).
- Using adapters from VAG1594A, connect VAG1 527B Voltage Tester to B+ and oil pressure switch. LED must not light up.
If LED lights up:
- Replace oil pressure switch -F1-, item no. 1.
If LED does not light up:
- Start engine and let run at idle. At 1.2 to 1.6 bar positive pressure the LED must light up, otherwise replace oil pressure switch -F1-, Item. 1.
Oil pressure, checking
- Check oil pressure at various engine speeds:
- Idle: at least 2.0 bar
- 2000 RPM: 3.0 to 5.5 bar
- above 2000 RPM: maximum 7.0 bar
If specified values are not obtained:
- Repair mechanical damage, e.g. bearing damage.
- At higher RPM, the oil pressure should not exceed 7.0 bar
If the specified value is exceeded:
- Check oil channels.
- If necessary replace oil pump.
