1NZ-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0136-P0139: Oxygen Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
PROCEDURE
1. READ OUTPUT DTC (DTC P0136, P0137, P0138 OR P0139)
(a) Connect a Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
(d) Read DTCs.
Result:
D -- READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR)
C -- PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (CONTROL THE INJECTION VOLUME)
B -- CHECK FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAK
A -- Continue to next step.
2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / O2S B1S2.
(d) Allow the engine to idle.
(e) Read the Heated Oxygen (HO2) sensor output voltage while idling.
Result:
B -- PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (INJECTION VOLUME)
A -- Continue to next step.
3. INSPECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (CHECK FOR SHORT)
(a) Disconnect the D28 HO2 sensor connector.
(b) Check the resistance.
Standard resistance:
(c) Reconnect the HO2 sensor connector.
NG -- REPLACE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.
4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CHECK FOR SHORT)
(a) Disconnect the C20 ECM connector.
(b) Check the resistance.
Standard resistance:
(c) Reconnect the ECM connector.
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal
5. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (INJECTION VOLUME)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Warm up the engine.
(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Injection Volume.
(e) Change the fuel injection volume using the Techstream, monitoring the voltage output of Air-Fuel Ratio (A/F) and HO2 sensors displayed on the Techstream.
HINT
- Change the fuel injection volume within the range of -12 % and +12 %. The injection volume can be changed in 0.1 or 0.2 % graduations within the range.
- The A/F sensor is displayed as AFS Voltage B1S1, and the HO2 sensor is displayed as O2S B1S2, on the Techstream.
Result:
HINT
A normal HO2 sensor voltage (O2S B1S2) reacts in accordance with increases and decreases in fuel injection volumes. When the A/F sensor voltage remains at either less or more than 3.3 V despite the HO2 sensor indicating a normal reaction, the A/F sensor is malfunctioning.

6. CHECK AIR-FUEL RATIO SENSOR CURRENT
HINT
This A/F sensor test is to check the A/F sensor current during the fuel cut. When the sensor is normal, the sensor current will indicate below 3.0 mA in this test.
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(c) Turn the Techstream on.
(d) Drive the vehicle by the drive pattern as listed below:
(1) Warm up the engine until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or more.
(2) Drive the vehicle at 40 mph (60 km/h) or more and decelerate the vehicle for 5 seconds or more.
(3) Repeat the deceleration above at least 3 times.
(e) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Monitor / O2 Sensor / Details.
(f) Confirm that RANGE B1S1 is either Pass or Fail. If the Techstream shows Incomplete, re-check RANGE B1S1 after performing the drive pattern.
(g) Select the RANGE B1S1.
(h) Read the Test Value.
Standard current:
Less than 3.0 mA
HINT
If the Techstream shows Incomplete again, increase the vehicle speed and use the second gear to decelerate the vehicle.
NOTICE:
Do not turn the ignition switch off during this step because the test results will be lost.

OK -- REPLACE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR
7. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (CONTROL THE INJECTION VOLUME)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Start the engine and warm it up.
(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Injection Volume / All Data / O2S B1S2.
(e) Change the fuel injection volume using the Techstream, monitoring the voltage output of the HO2 sensors displayed on the Techstream.
HINT
- Change the fuel injection volume within the range of -12% to +12%. The injection volume can be changed in 0.1 or 0.2% gradations within this range.
- The air fuel ratio sensor has an output delay of a few seconds and the heated oxygen sensor has a maximum output delay of approximately 20 seconds.
Standard:
Fluctuates between 0.4 V or less and 0.55 V or more.
NG -- CHECK FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAK
OK -- Continue to next step.
8. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (INJECTION VOLUME)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Warm up the engine.
(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Injection Volume.
(e) Change the fuel injection volume using the Techstream, monitoring the voltage output of Air-Fuel Ratio (A/F) and HO2 sensors displayed on the Techstream.

9. CHECK FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAK
(a) Check for exhaust gas leak.
OK:
No gas leak.
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE EXHAUST GAS LEAK POINT
OK -- Continue to next step.
10. INSPECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HEATER RESISTANCE) P0037
NG -- REPLACE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.
11. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR - ECM)
(a) Disconnect the D28 HO2 sensor connector.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(c) Measure the voltage between the +B terminal of the HO2 sensor connector and body ground.
Standard voltage:
(d) Turn the ignition switch off.
(e) Disconnect the C20 ECM connector.
(f) Check the resistance.
Standard resistance (Check for open):
Standard resistance (Check for short):
(g) Reconnect the HO2 sensor connector.
(h) Reconnect the ECM connector.
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
12. REPLACE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR
(a) Replace the heated oxygen sensor Removal.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
13. PERFORM CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
(a) Perform the Confirmation Driving Pattern (P0136, P0137 and P0138).
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
14. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0136, P0137 OR P0138)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(c) Turn the Techstream on.
(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
(e) Input DTCs: P0136, P0137 and P0138.
(f) Check that the DTC monitor is NORMAL. If DTC monitor is INCOMPLETE, perform the drive pattern increasing the vehicle speed and using the second gear to decelerate the vehicle.

15. REPLACE AIR-FUEL RATIO SENSOR
(a) Replace the air-fuel ratio sensor Removal.

16. PERFORM CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
(a) Perform the Confirmation Driving Pattern (P0136, P0137 and P0138).

17. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0136, P0137 OR P0138)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(c) Turn the Techstream on.
(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
(e) Input DTCs: P0136, P0137 and P0138.
(f) Check that the DTC monitor is NORMAL. If DTC monitor is INCOMPLETE, perform the drive pattern increasing the vehicle speed and using the second gear to decelerate the vehicle.

18. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Start the engine.
(c) Turn the Techstream on.
(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / O2S B1S2.
(e) After warming up the engine, run the engine at an engine speed of 2500 rpm for 3 minutes.
(f) Allow the engine to idle.
(g) Depress the accelerator pedal quickly until the engine speed reaches 2500 rpm 3 times.

19. INSPECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (CHECK FOR SHORT)
(a) Disconnect the D28 HO2 sensor connector.
(b) Check the resistance.

NG -- REPLACE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.
20. CHECK HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (CHECK FOR SHORT)
(a) Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 5 minutes.
(b) Disconnect the C20 ECM connector.
(c) Check the resistance.
Standard resistance:
(d) Reconnect the ECM connector.
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal
21. PERFORM CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
(a) Perform the Confirmation Driving Pattern (P0139).

22. CHECK DTC OUTPUT
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(c) Turn the Techstream on.
(d) Perform confirmation driving pattern.
(e) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
(f) Input DTCs: P0139.
(g) Check the DTC monitor is NORMAL. If DTC monitor is INCOMPLETE, perform the drive pattern increasing the vehicle speed and using the second gear to decelerate the vehicle.
