Warranty Information
^ This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
^ Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.
Removal Procedure
Remove LH hinge torsion bar.
1. Remove the torsion bar LH from the torsion bar support located in the center. Use the SST.
^ Support the trunk lid during the torsion bar removal procedure. When the torsion bars are removed, the door can shut suddenly due to the lack of tension from the torsion bars.
^ Since the torsion bar for the RH hinge is above the torsion bar for the LH hinge, first remove the torsion bar for the LH hinge and then remove the torsion bar for the RH hinge.
2. Slightly close the trunk lid and then attach the SST (luggage compartment tool) as shown in the illustration.
3. Push down on the SST tool to disengage the LH hinge arm.
4. Pull the SST tool toward you and disengage the U-shaped section from the LH hinge support.
NOTE
Hold SST tool with both hands and slowly remove the U-shaped section.
5. Remove the LH hinge torsion bar from the RH hinge support.
6. Remove RH hinge torsion bar.
HINT
Use the same basic procedure for removing the RH hinge torsion bar as was used for the LH hinge torsion bar.
7. Remove the RH torsion bar from the torsion bar support located in the center.
8. Slightly close the trunk lid and attach the SST
9. Push down on the SST to disengage the RH hinge arm.
10. Pull the SST toward you and remove the U-shaped section from the RH hinge support.
NOTE
Hold the SST tool with both hands and slowly remove the U-shaped section.
11. Remove the RH trunk lid hinge torsion bar from the RH hinge support.
Installation Procedure
NOTE
^ Support the trunk lid during the torsion bar installation procedure. When the torsion bars are being installed, the door can shut suddenly due to the lack of tension from the torsion bars.
^ Since the torsion bar for the RH hinge is above the torsion bar for the LH hinge, install the RH side first then the LH side.
Install RH hinge torsion bar
HINT
^ Prior to installation, make sure the correct torsion bars are being installed.
^ An orange paint mark is used on torsion bars for vehicles w/o rear spoiler.
^ A blue paint mark is used on torsion bars for vehicles with rear spoiler.

3. Push down on the SST tool and install the torsion bar to the LH hinge arm.
4. Install the RH trunk lid hinge torsion bar to the clip on the center of the upper back panel.
Install LH hinge torsion bar
Use the same procedure for the LH side as the RH side.
^ Prior to installation, make sure the correct torsion bars are being installed.
^ A yellow paint mark is used on torsion bars for vehicles wlo rear spoiler.
^ A green paint mark is used on torsion bars for vehicles with a rear spoiler.
