Introduction
Some 2003 model year Corolla owners may experience an intermittent condition when attempting to open the trunk using the trunk lock release lever. Parts have been modified to improve this condition.

This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.
Repair Procedure
If the interior trunk release is inoperative or works intermittently, replace the Luggage Door Lock Control Cable Sub-Assembly using the following procedure:
1. Disconnect negative battery cable (if vehicle is equipped with side impact airbags).
2. Remove the two bolts holding the lock assembly in place.
Torque: 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf)
3. Remove the trunk release cable from the lock assembly.
4. Remove the 5 clips holding the upper portion of the luggage compartment door cover.
5. Fold down left rear seat.
6. Remove the four clips from the left room partition board.
7. Remove the bolt from the back of the seat.
Torque: 18 N.m (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf)
8. Remove the left room partition board.
9. Remove the left front seat.
A. Remove the headrest.
B. Place the seat in the most forward position.
C. Remove the 2 rear seat track covers.
D. Remove the 2 rear bolts.
E. Place the seat in the most rear position.
F. Remove the 2 front bolts.
G. Carefully tilt seat towards the left side of the vehicle and remove the two wire harness connectors (side airbag and power seat function) if applicable.
H. Remove the seat from vehicle.
Torque: 47 N.m (480 kgf.cm, 35 ft.lbf)
10. Remove the left rear door scuff plate.
11. Remove the left lower center pillar garnish.
12. Remove the left front door scuff plate.
13. Remove the left cowl side trim board.
14. Under the left front door scuff plate; remove the wires from the two white clips.
15. Carefully lift the carpet out of the two clips.
16. Remove the bolt from the trunk lock/fuel door release lever.
17. Slide the trunk lock/fuel door release lever out and disconnect the trunk release cable from the assembly.
18. Replace the cable, making sure the cable is routed correctly.
19. Reassemble in reverse order.
