Introduction
A procedure has been developed for removal and installation of the front shock absorber on 1998 - 2001 model year Corolla vehicles due to the addition of plate washers between the front suspension support and support nuts.

Repair Procedure
Removal
1. Remove the front wheel.
2. With ABS: Disconnect the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamp.
3. Remove the bolt and disconnect the flexible hose from the shock absorber.
4. Remove the shock absorber with coil spring.
A. Remove the 2 nuts and bolts, and disconnect the shock absorber from the steering knuckle. (See illustration.)
B. Remove the 3 nuts, 3 plate washers and the shock absorber with coil spring. (See illustration.)
Installation
1. Install the shock absorber with coil spring.
A. Install the shock absorber with coil spring, 3 plate washers and 3 nuts.
Torque: 39 Nm (400 kgf cm, 29 ft lbf)
B. Connect the shock absorber to the steering knuckle.
C. Coat the threads of the 2 nuts with engine oil.
D. Install the 2 bolts and nuts.
Torque: 274 Nm (2,800 kgf cm, 203 ft lbf)
2. Connect the flexible hose to the shock absorber.
Torque: 29 Nm (300 kgf cm, 22 ft lbf)
3. With ABS: Connect the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamp.
4. Install the front wheel.
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf cm, 76 ft lbf)
5. Check the front wheel alignment.
