Removal and Installation
NOTE: On models with coded audio anti-theft systems, refer to Technician Safety Information for code procedures. On models with air bag system, disarm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove oil level gauge and air duct.
2. Remove air cleaner element. Remove bolts retaining air cleaner lower case assembly, then the case assembly.
3. Remove throttle cable, wire harness and upper side mounting bolts.
4. Attach hoist to engine hangers, then raise vehicle and remove front wheels.
5. Remove engine cover, then drain differential and transaxle fluid.
6. Remove cotter pin and lock cap, then apply brakes and remove driveshaft locknut.
7. Using ball joint puller, tool No. 09628-62011 or equivalent, disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle, then the lower ball joint from lower arm.
8. Using universal puller, tool No. 09950-20017 or equivalent, disconnect driveshaft steering knuckle. Be careful not to damage driveshaft boot and inner oil seal.
9. Remove driveshaft and snap ring, then disconnect solenoid connector and control cable.
10. Disconnect connector from park/neutral position switch (neutral start switch), then remove oil cooler tube and ground wire.
11. Remove bolts from engine mounting left side bracket, then remove starter and speedometer cable.
12. Disconnect No. 2 speed sensor, raise transaxle, then remove bolt from rear mount No. 1 bracket.
13. Remove hole plug and bolts, then the torque converter and transaxle housing mounting bolts. Remove torque converter.
14. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Drain, wash and refill torque converter with ATF.
b. Torque transaxle mounting bolts to 47 ft. lb. converter mounting bolts to 13 ft. lb. starter nuts and bolt to 29 ft. lb. engine mounting and ground wire bolt to 32 ft. lb.
c. When installing driveshaft, be careful not to damage boots or oil seal.
d. Torque lower arm nuts and bolt to 59 ft. lb. steering knuckle nut to 36 ft. lb. driveshaft locknut to 152 ft. lb.
e. Inspect front wheel alignment, then install differential and transaxle drain plugs.
f. Fill transaxle with 7.6 qts. ATF, then check fluid level. On models with air bag system, rearm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information. If audio system was disabled, activate as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
