Starter Motor: Testing and Inspection

Caution: These tests must be performed within 3 to 5 seconds to avoid burning out the coil.

Pull-In Test:

1. Disconnect the field coil lead wire from terminal C.






2. Connect the battery to the magnetic switch as shown.
3. Check that the clutch pinion gear moves outward.
4. If not as specified perform the Hold-In Test.

Hold-In Test:






5. With the battery connected as above and with the clutch pinion gear out, disconnect the negative lead from terminal C.
6. Check that the pinion gear remains out.
7. If not as specified, inspect the clutch pinion gear return.

Clutch Pinion Gear Return:






8. Disconnect the negative lead from the switch body.
9. Check that the clutch pinion gear returns inward.
10. If not as specified perform the No-Load Performance Test.

No-Load Performance Test:






11. Connect the battery and ammeter to the starter as shown.
12. Check that the starter rotates smoothly and steadily with the pinion gear moving out.
13. Check that the ammeter shows the specified current.

- Specified Current: 90 A or less at 11.5 V.
