Fuel Rail: Service and Repair

REMOVAL:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove air intake connector and air cleaner housing top.
3. Disconnect accelerator cable and, on A/T model, the throttle cable.
4. Disconnect the vacuum sensing hose from the Fuel Pressure Regulator.
5. Place a container underneath the fuel return hose and disconnect the fuel return hose from the fuel return pipe.
6. Disconnect the fuel return pipe from the FPR.

Removing The Fuel Return Pipe:

7. Remove the union bolt, two gaskets and the inlet pipe from the fuel rail.

Removing The Fuel Inlet Line From The Fuel Rail:

8. Disconnect the electrical connectors for the fuel injectors.
9. Remove the two bolts and fuel rail together with the four injectors.

Removing The Fuel Rail From The Cylinder Head:

CAUTION: Be careful not to drop the injectors as damage to the tips will result.

10. After the fuel rail is safely over a work bench, remove the four injectors.
11. Remove the two spacers and four insulators from the cylinder head.

INSTALLATION:

1. Install new grommets to the injectors.
2. Apply a light coat of gasoline to the new O-rings and install them to the injectors.

Fuel Injector Grommet And O-Ring:

3. While turning the injectors side to side, install them into the fuel rail. Install all four injectors as shown in the illustration.

Installing Fuel Injectors Into Fuel Rail:

4. Place the two spacers and four insulators in position on the cylinder head.

Spacer And Insulator Placement:

5. Place the injectors together with the fuel rail on the cylinder head.
6. Install the two mount bolts. Torque the bolts to 14 ft.lbs (19 Nm).
7. Check and make sure the injectors rotate smoothly from side to side. If the injectors do not rotate smoothly then the O-rings are most likely binding. Replace the O-rings and reinstall.

Checking For Proper Fuel Injector Installation:

8. Connect the gray connectors to the No.1 injectors and the brown connectors to the No.2 injectors.
9. Install two new gaskets, the fuel inlet pipe and union bolt to the fuel rail. Torque the union bolt to 22 ft.lbs (29 Nm).
10. Connect the fuel return pipe to the fuel pressure regulator.
11. Connect the vacuum sensing hose to the fuel pressure regulator.
12. On A/T equipped models, connect and adjust the throttle cable.
13. Connect and adjust the accelerator cable.
14. Install the air intake connector and air cleaner housing top.
15. install the PCV hoses.
16. Connect the negative battery cable.
17. Check for fuel leaks.
