1. On models with audio coded anti-theft system, disable system as outlined under Technician Safety Information. Disable airbag system as described under Technician Safety Information.
2. Remove hood, hood side panels and undercovers, Fig. 1.
3. Drain engine coolant, engine oil and transaxle oil.
4. Remove suspension upper brace, then air cleaner assembly.
5. Remove No. 1 and 2 air intake connectors.
6. Disconnect accelerator cable. Then remove cruise actuator and linkage, if equipped.
7. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose and engine ground strap connector.
8. Remove check connector and turbocharger pressure sensor.
9. Remove injector solenoid resistor, fuel pump relay, fuel pump resistor and A/C VSV.
10. Remove water filler tube and charcoal canister.
11. Remove engine relay box, ignition coil and igniter. Disconnect engine wire.
12. Disconnect engine wire from luggage compartment. Then disconnect starter cable.
13. Disconnect water inlet hose, fuel inlet hose, fuel return hose and radiator hose from water outlet housing.
14. Disconnect transaxle control cables.
15. Remove tailpipe and front exhaust pipe.
16. Remove engine compartment cooling fan.
17. Remove idler pulley bracket and A/C compressor without disconnecting hoses.
18. Remove intercooler.
19. Remove rear engine mounting insulator. Then disconnect speedometer cable.
20. Remove rear suspension crossmember, then front engine mounting insulator.
21. Remove front engine mounting bracket and clutch release cylinder.
22. Remove righthand and lefthand engine mounting stays.
23. Remove lateral control rod and air cleaner case bracket.
24. Remove engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.
25. Remove rear engine mounting bracket, lefthand mounting bracket and starter. Then separate engine and transaxle.
26. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten all fasteners to specifications.
b. If audio system was disabled, activate as outlined under Technician Safety Information. On models with air bag system, rearm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
