Removal and Installation





ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION COMPONENTS

TRANSAXLE REMOVAL
1. REMOVE LEVEL GAUGE

2. REMOVE RESERVOIR TANK

3. DISCONNECT THROTTLE CABLE

4. REMOVE AIR CLEANER





5. REMOVE UPPER SIDE ENGINE LEFT MOUNTING BOLTS

Torque: 56 N.m (570 kgf.cm, 41 ft.lbf)

6. REMOVE ENGINE LEFT MOUNTING STAY

Torque: 21 N.m (210 kgf.cm. 15 ft.lbf)

7. REMOVE GROUND CABLE

Torque: 18 N.m (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf)

8. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS CLAMP AND THROTTLE CABLE CLAMP

9. REMOVE UPPER SIDE STARTER MOUNTING BOLT

Torque: 39 N.m (400 kgf.cm, 29 ft.lbf)





10. REMOVE 2 UPPER SIDE TRANSAXLE MOUNTING BOLTS FROM TRANSAXLE SIDE

Torque: 64 N.m (650 kgf.cm, 47 ft.lbf)

11. RAISE VEHICLE

12. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER

13. REMOVE LH AND RH DRIVE SHAFTS

REMOVAL HINT: Suspend the drive shaft securely.





14. JACK UP TRANSAXLE





15. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE
(a) Remove the 2 bolts from the exhaust pipe stay.

Torque: 19 N.m (195 kgf.cm, 14 ft.lbf)

(b) Remove the nut and exhaust pipe stay from suspension member.

Torque: 19 N.m (195 kgf.cm. 14 ft.lbf)

(c) Remove the 2 bolts from the exhaust pipe.

Torque: 43 N.m (440 kgf.cm, 32 ft.lbf)





(d) Disconnect the oxygen sensor.

Torque: 44 N.m (450 kgf.cm, 32 ft.lbf)

(e) Remove the 2 nuts.

Torque: 43 N.m (440 kgf.cm. 32 ft.lbf)

INSTALLATION HINT: Replace used nuts with new ones.
(f) Remove the front exhaust pipe and gaskets.

INSTALLATION HINT: Replace used gaskets with new ones.





16. INSTALL ENGINE SUPPORT FIXTURE





17. REMOVE SUSPENSION MEMBER
(a) Remove the grommet.
(b) Remove the 14 bolts and 3 nuts.

Torque:
A Bolt: 61 N.m (620 kgf.cm. 45 ft.lbf)
B Bolt: 64 N.m (650 kgf.cm, 47 ft.lbf)
C Bolt: 225 N.m (2.305 kgf.cm, 167 ft.lbf)
D Bolt: 147 N.m (1.500 kgf.cm. 109 ft.lbf)
E Bolt: 175 N.m (1.784 kgf.cm, 129 ft.lbf)
F Bolt: 50 N.m (510 kgf.cm. 37 ft.lbf)
Nut: 57 N.m (580 kgf.cm. 42 ft.lbf)


INSTALLATION HINT: Replace used E bolts with new ones.
(c) Remove the suspension member.





16. REMOVE STARTER
(a) Remove the nut and disconnect the connector.
(b) Remove the bolt and starter.

Torque: 39 N.m (400 kgf.cm. 29 ft.lbf)

19. DISCONNECT VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR CONNECTOR

20. DISCONNECT SOLENOID CONNECTOR AND PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CONNECTOR
(a) Disconnect the solenoid connector and park/neutral position switch connector.
(b) Remove the wire harness clamps.





21. REMOVE SHIFT CONTROL CABLE
(a) Remove the nut from control shaft lever.

Torque: 12 N.m (120 kgf.cm, 9 ft.lbf)





(b) Remove the clip and disconnect the control cable.





22. REMOVE OIL COOLER HOSE
Loosen the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 oil cooler hoses.

23. REMOVE FILLER PIPE
(a) Remove the bolt and pipes.
(b) Disconnect the breather hose from the filler pipe.





24. REMOVE TRANSAXLE
(a) Remove the hole plug.
(b) Turn the crankshaft to gain access and remove the 6 bolts with holding the crankshaft pulley set bolt by a wrench.

Torque: 26 N.m (260 kgf.cm, 18 ft.lbf)





(c) Remove the 5 bolts and transaxle.

Torque:
A Bolt: 23 N.m (230 kgf.cm, 17 ft.lbf)
B Bolt: 25 N.m (250 kgf.cm, 18 ft.lbf)
C Bolt: 48 N.m (470 kgf.cm. 34 ft.lbf)
D Bolt: 64 N.m (660 kgf.cm, 47 ft.lbf)

TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH AND DRIVE PLATE INSPECTION






1. INSPECT ONE-WAY CLUTCH
(a) Install SST into the inner race of the one-way clutch.

(b) Install SST so that it fits in the notch of the converter hub and outer race of the one-way clutch.

(c) With the torque converter clutch standing on its side, check that the clutch locks when turned counterclockwise, and rotates freely and smoothly clockwise. If necessary, clean the converter and retest the clutch. Replace the converter if the clutch still fails the test.





2. MEASURE DRIVE PLATE RUNOUT AND INSPECT RING GEAR
Set up a dial indicator and measure the drive plate runout.

Maximum runout: 0.20 mm (0.0079 in.)

If the runout is not within the specification, replace the drive plate.

Torque: 64 N.m (650 kgf.cm, 47 ft.lbf)





3. MEASURE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SLEEVE RUNOUT

Temporarily mount the torque converter clutch to the drive plate. Set up a dial indicator.

Maximum runout: 0.30 mm (0.0118 in.)

If the runout is not within the specification, try to correct by reorienting the installation of the converter.

HINT: Mark the position of the converter clutch to ensure the correct installation.





TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH INSTALLATION CHECK
Using calipers and a straight edge, measure from the installed surface to the front surface of the transaxle housing.

Correct distance: More then 22.8 mm (0.898 in.)

TRANSAXLE INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

INSTALLATION HINT:
- After installation, adjust the throttle cable, shift cable and park/neutral position switch.
- Fill ATF and check fluid level.
- Test drive the vehicle.
