Oil Pan: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect negative (-) terminal cable from battery.
CAUTION: Work must be started after 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the "LOCK" position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.
2. Drain engine oil.
3. Remove engine under covers.
4. Remove front exhaust pipe.
a. Remove the 2 bolts holding the front exhaust pipe to the exhaust pipe sup port bracket.
b. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts holding the front exhaust pipe to the rear Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC)/center exhaust bracket.
c. Using a 14 mm deep socket wrench, remove the 3 nuts holding the front exhaust pipe to the TWC (front).
d. Remove the front exhaust pipe and 2 gaskets.
5. A/T only: Remove the 2 bolts. and disconnect the transaxle control cable from engine mounting center member.
6. Remove the 2 bolts, nut and exhaust pipe support bracket
7. Remove engine mounting center member.
a. Remove the 2 dust covers from the rear side of the center member.
b. Disconnect the A/C pipe from the bracket.
c. Remove the bolt and nut holding the front engine mounting bracket to the mounting insulator.
d. Remove the bolt holding the rear engine mounting bracket to the mounting insulator.
e. Remove the bolt and 2 nuts holding the rear engine mounting insulator to the front suspension member.
f. Remove the 2 bolts (A/T) or 3 bolts (M/T) and rear engine mounting bracket.
g. Remove the 2 bolts holding the center member to the body, and remove the center member and rear engine mounting insulator.
8. Remove TWC (front).
a. California only: Disconnect the sub oxygen sensor connector.
b. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and RH exhaust manifold stay.
c. Remove the 3 bolts, 2 nuts, TWC, gasket, retainer and cushion.
9. Remove rear end plate stiffener.
a. Remove the bolt, nut and intake manifold stay.
b. Remove the 6 bolts and plate stiffener.
10. Remove oil pan.
a. Remove the oil dipstick.
b. Remove the 17 bolts and 2 nuts.
c, Insert the blade of SST 09032-00100 between the cylinder block and oil pan, and cut off applied sealer and remove the oil pan.
CAUTION:
^ Do not use SST for the oil pump body side and rear oil seal retainer.
^ Be careful not to damage the oil pan flange.
INSTALLATION
1. Install oil pan.
a. Remove any old packing Formed In Place Gasket (FIPG) material and be careful not to drop any oil on the contact surfaces of the oil pan and cylinder block.
^ Using a razor blade and gasket scraper, remove all the old packing (FIPG) material from the gasket surfaces and sealing groove.
^ Thoroughly clean all components to remove all the loose material.
^ Using a non-residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces.
CAUTION: Do not use a solvent which will effect the painted surfaces.
b. Apply seal packing to the oil pan as shown in the illustration.
Seal packing: Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent
^ Install a nozzle that has been cut to a 3 - 5 mm (0.12 - 0.20 in.) opening.
^ Parts must be assembled within 5 minutes of application. Otherwise the material must be removed and reapplied.
^ Immediately remove nozzle from the tube and reinstall cap.
c. Install the oil pan with the 17 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the the bolts and nuts in several passes.
Torque: 5.4 Nm (48 in lb)
d. Install the dipstick.
2. Install rear end plate stiffener.
a. Install the plate stiffener with the 6 bolts. Alternately tighten the the bolts in several passes.
Torque:
12 mm head: 21 Nm (15 ft lb)
14 mm head: 44 Nm (32 ft lb)
b. Install the intake manifold stay with the bolt and nut.
Torque:
Bolt: 21 Nm (15 ft lb)
Nut: 44 Nm (32 ft lb)
3. Install TWC (front).
a. Place the cushion, retainer and a new gasket on the TWC.
b. Install the TWC with the 3 bolts and 2 nuts.
Torque: 29 Nm (21 ft lb)
c. Install the RH exhaust manifold stay with the 2 bolts and 2 new nuts.
Torque: 42 Nm (31 ft lb)
d. California only: Connect the sub oxygen sensor connector.
4. Install engine mounting center member.
a. Attach the center member together with the rear engine mounting insulator to the front suspension member.
b. Temporarily install the 2 bolts holding the center member to the body.
c. Install the rear engine mounting bracket with the 2 bolts (A/T) or 3 bolts (M/T).
Torque: 78 Nm (58 ft lb)
d. Temporarily install the bolt and 2 nuts holding the rear engine mounting insulator to the front suspension member.
e. Temporarily install the bolt holding the rear engine mounting bracket to the mounting insulator.
f. Temporarily install the bolt and nut holding the front engine mounting bracket to the mounting insulator.
g. Tighten the 2 bolts holding the center member to the body.
Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft lb)
h. Tighten the bolt and 2 nuts holding the rear engine mounting insulator to the front suspension member.
Torque: 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
i. Tighten the bolt holding the rear engine mounting bracket to the mounting insulator.
Torque: 88 Nm (65 ft lb)
j. Tighten the bolt and nut holding the front engine mounting bracket to the mounting insulator.
Torque: 88 Nm (65 ft lb)
k. Install the A/C pipe to the bracket.
l. Install the 2 dust covers to the center member.
5. Install exhaust pipe support bracket with the 2 bolts and nut.
Torque: 19 Nm (14 ft lb)
6. A/T only: Install the transaxle control cable to engine mounting center member with the 2 clamps and 2 bolts.
7. Install front exhaust pipe.
a. Place 2 new gaskets to the front and rear of the front exhaust pipe.
b. Temporarily install the 2 bolts and 2 new nuts holding the front exhaust pipe to the rear TWC/center exhaust pipe.
c. Temporarily install 3 new nuts holding the front exhaust pipe to the TWC (front).
d. Temporarily install the 2 bolts holding the front exhaust pipe to the exhaust pipe support bracket.
e. Using a 14 mm deep socket wrench, tighten the 3 nuts holding the front exhaust pipe to the TWC (front).
Torque: 62 Nm (46 ft lb)
f. Tighten the 2 bolts and nuts holding the front exhaust pipe to the rear TWC/center exhaust pipe.
Torque: 43 Nm (32 ft lb)
g. Tighten the 2 bolts holding the front exhaust pipe to the exhaust pipe support bracket.
Torque: 19 Nm (14 ft lb)
8. Connect negative (-) terminal cable to battery.
9. Fill with engine oil.
10. Start engine and check for oil leaks.
11. Recheck engine oil level.
12. Install engine under covers.
