Fuel Pressure: Testing and Inspection
TEST PROCEDURES1. CHECK THAT BATTERY VOLTAGE IS ABOVE 12 VOLTS.
2. DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL CABLE FROM THE BATTERY.
CAUTION: Work must not be started for at least 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.
3. REMOVE THE UNION BOLT AND 2 GASKETS, AND DISCONNECT THE FUEL INLET HOSE FROM THE FUEL FILTER OUTLET.
CAUTION: Put a pan under the fuel filter to catch spilled fuel. Put a shop towel over the fuel filter fitting and slowly loosen the union bolt.
4. CONNECT A FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE.
- Install the fuel inlet hose and pressure gauge to the fuel filter outlet with 3 new gaskets and the union bolt (SST 09268-45012).
Torque: 29 Nm (22 ft.lb)
5. WIPE OFF ANY SPLATTERED GASOLINE.
6. JUMP FUEL PUMP CHECK CONNECTOR TERMINALS.
- Using a jumper wire (or SST) connect terminals +B and FP of the data link connector (DLC) 1 (SST 09843-18020).
7. RECONNECT THE NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL CABLE TO THE BATTERY.
8. TURN THE IGNITION SWITCH ON. DO NOT START THE ENGINE.
9. MEASURE THE FUEL PRESSURE.
Fuel pressure: 265 - 304 kPa (38 - 44 psi)
- If pressure is high, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
- If pressure is low, check the following parts:
- Fuel hoses and connections
- Fuel pump
- Fuel filter
- If all tests OK, replace fuel pressure regulator.
10. REMOVE THE JUMPER FROM DLC 1.
11. START THE ENGINE.
12. DISCONNECT THE VACUUM SENSING HOSE FROM THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR, AND PLUG THE HOSE END.
13. MEASURE THE FUEL PRESSURE AT IDLE.
Fuel pressure: 265 - 304 kPa (38 - 44 psi)
14. RECONNECT THE VACUUM SENSING HOSE TO THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR.
15. MEASURE THE FUEL PRESSURE AT IDLE.
Fuel pressure: 226 - 265 kPa (33 - 38 psi)
- If pressure is not as specified, check the vacuum sensing hose.
- If the hose is OK, replace fuel pressure regulator.
16. STOP THE ENGINE.
17. CHECK RESIDUAL FUEL PRESSURE.
- Check that the fuel pressure remains as specified for 5 minutes after the engine has stopped.
Fuel pressure: 147 kPa (21 psi) or more after 5 minutes
18. REMOVE FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE.
- After checking fuel pressure, disconnect the negative(-) terminal cable from the battery and carefully remove the fuel pressure gauge.
19. CONNECT THE FUEL INLET HOSE WITH 2 NEW GASKETS AND THE UNION BOLT.
Torque: 29 Nm (22 ft.lb)
20. RECONNECT THE NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL CABLE TO THE BATTERY AND CHECK FOR FUEL LEAKAGE.
