Spark Plug: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE TERMINAL CABLE FROM BATTERY.

CAUTION: Work must not be started until at least after 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.

2. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT.
3. DISCONNECT CONTROL CABLES FROM THROTTLE BODY.
- Disconnect the following cables:



(1) Accelerator cable
(2) A/T throttle control cable
(3) Cruise control actuator cable

4. REMOVE INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR PIPE.
(a) Disconnect the following hoses:



(1) P/S air hose from air connector pipe
(2) PCV hose from No.2 cylinder head cover
(b) Loosen the 2 hose clamps. and remove the air connector pipe together with the hoses.

5. DISCONNECT THROTTLE BODY BRACKET FROM THROTTLE BODY AND CYLINDER HEAD.



- Remove the 4 nuts, and disconnect the throttle body bracket from the throttle body and cylinder head.

6. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY.
(a) Disconnect the following connectors and hoses from the throttle body:



(1) Throttle position sensor connector
(2) IAC valve connector
(3) 4 vacuum hoses
(4) California vehicles ONLY: Air hose (to intake manifold)
(5) Water bypass hose (from No.2 water bypass pipe)



(b) Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts.



(c) Slightly slide the throttle body away from the intake air connector.



(d) Disconnect the water bypass hose (to the water outlet) from the throttle body.
(e) Remove the throttle body and gasket.

7. REMOVE NO.3 TIMING BELT COVER.
(a) Remove the oil filler cap.



(b) Using a 5 mm hexagon wrench, remove the 6 bolts and timing belt cover.

8. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD REAR COVER.



- Using a 5 mm hexagon wrench, remove the 4 bolts and rear cover.

9. REMOVE HIGH-TENSION CORDS FROM SPARK PLUGS.
10. REMOVE SPARK PLUGS.



- Using a 16 mm plug wrench, remove the 6 spark plugs.

RECOMMENDED SPARK PLUGS
ND: PK16R11
or
NGK: BKR5EP11


Electrode Gap: 1.1 mm (0.043 in)

INSTALLATION
10. INSTALL NEW SPARK PLUGS.



- Using a 16 mm plug wrench, install the 6 NEW spark plugs.

Torque: 18 Nm (13 ft.lb)

11. CONNECT HIGH-TENSION CORDS TO SPARK PLUGS.
12. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD REAR COVER.
13. INSTALL NO.3 TIMING BELT COVER.
14. INSTALL THROTTLE BODY.



(a) Install a new gasket to the intake air connector.
(b) Slide the throttle body onto the stud bolts on the intake air connector.



(c) Connect the water bypass hose (from the water outlet) to the throttle body.



(d) Install the throttle body with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts.

Torque: 21 Nm (15 ft.lb)

(e) Connect the following connectors and hoses:



(1) Throttle position sensor connector
(2) IAC valve connector
(3) 4 vacuum hoses
(4) California vehicles ONLY: Air hose (from intake manifold)
(5) Water bypass hose (from No.2 water bypass pipe)

15. INSTALL THROTTLE BODY BRACKET .



- Install the throttle body bracket with the 4 nuts.

Torque: 21 Nm (15 ft.lb)

16. INSTALL INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR PIPE.
(a) Install the air connector pipe with the 2 hose clamps.
(b) Connect the following hoses:



(1) P/S air hose to air connector pipe
(2) PCV hose to No.2 cylinder head cover

17. CONNECT CONTROL CABLES TO THROTTLE BODY.
- Connect the following cables:



(1) Accelerator cable
(2) A/T throttle control cable
(3) Cruise control actuator cable

18. FILL WITH ENGINE COOLANT.
19. CONNECT NEGATIVE TERMINAL CABLE TO BATTERY.
