Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disarm airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information.2. Disconnect battery ground cable, drain coolant, then remove battery and coolant reservoir tank.
3. Scribe installation reference marks in engine hood hinge area, then remove hood.
4. Remove engine undercovers.
5. Remove air cleaner assembly with air intake connector.
6. Remove radiator assembly.
7. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect throttle cable.
8. Disconnect accelerator cable.
9. Remove air cleaner bracket.
10. Disconnect ground strap from lefthand fender apron.
11. Remove charcoal canister, then drain case.
12. Position suitable fuel container, disconnect fuel return hoses, then remove union bolt and gaskets and disconnect fuel inlet hose.
13. Disconnect PCV hose, brake booster vacuum hose, vacuum sensor hose, two idle up vacuum hoses and two idle up air hoses, as equipped.
14. Disconnect engine wire harness, electrical connectors as follows:
a. Starter.
b. Fan water temperature switch.
c. Water temperature sender gauge.
d. Water temperature sensor.
e. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, water temperature switch, neutral start switch and ECT solenoid.
f. Oxygen sensor.
g. Oil pressure switch.
h. On with manual transaxle, back-up light switch.
i. EGR gas temperature sensor.
j. Wiper motor.
k. EGR vacuum switching valve.
l. Throttle opener VSV
m. Alternator.
n. Fuel injectors.
o. Distributor.
p. ECT solenoid.
15. Disconnect ground straps, then remove eight clamps and engine wiring harness.
16. On models equipped with cruise control, remove cruise control actuator.
17. Disconnect vacuum switching valve vacuum hoses, then remove ground strap and valve assembly.
18. Disconnect heater hoses from heater radiator pipes.
19. Disconnect speedometer cable and control cables from transaxle.
20. On models equipped with manual transaxle, remove clutch release cylinder without disconnecting tube.
21. On models equipped with power steering, remove power steering belt, remove power steering pump attaching bolts and position aside, then remove power steering pump adjusting strut.
22. On models equipped with A/C, less power steering, loosen idler pulley attaching nut, remove compressor belt, then remove idler pulley bracket attaching bolts.
23. On models equipped with A/C, disconnect A/C compressor electrical connector, remove compressor attaching bolts and position compressor aside, then remove compressor bracket.
24. Remove front exhaust pipe.
25. Remove driveshafts.
26. Install suitable engine lifting equipment, then remove rear engine mount and bracket.
27. Disconnect ground strap, then remove lefthand engine mount.
28. Carefully lift engine from vehicle, tip transaxle and engine assembly rearward to clear battery carrier support.
29. Position engine and transaxle assembly on suitable stand.
30. Remove engine rear end plate hole cover, then turn crankshaft to gain access to torque converter bolts, remove six bolts, then remove torque converter.
31. Remove starter assembly.
32. Separate engine and transaxle assembly.
33. Reverse procedure to install, tighten attaching nuts and bolts to specifications.
34. Rearm airbag system.
