Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
Ignition System Schematic:
PURPOSE
The camshaft angle sensor produces an output pulse to the ECM twice per distributor rotation. The ECM uses this signal to determine TDC postion for #1 cylinder.
LOCATION
The sensor is mounted inside the distributor.
CONSTRUCTION
The sensor is made up of two pick-up coils and a rotor with 1 tooth. The tooth coresponds to #1 cylinder TDC.
OPERATION
Whenever the engine is rotating, a sine-wave signal is returned to the ECM. As engine speed increases the frequency of the signal increases as well. When coupled with the signal of the engine rpm sensor, exact piston position can be determined by the ECM.
