Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures

Troubleshooting Chart:




Diagnosis by Symptom



NOTE: To gain proper access to spark plugs, ignition wires, and coil pack, it is necessary to remove components as described in this procedure.

Air Cleaner Hose Removal:





- Disconnect air cleaner hose.
- Disconnect cruise control, accelerator, and automatic throttle cables.
- Disconnect six hoses from ISC pipe.

ISC Pipe Removal:





- Remove the two retaining bolts and remove the ISC pipe.
- Remove the oxygen sensor wire from the two clamps.
- Disconnect the #4 PCV hose from the PCV pipe.

PCV Pipe Removal:





- Remove the two retaining bolts. Remove the PCV pipe with hoses from cylinder head covers and throttle body.
- Disconnect the air valve hose from the intake air connector.

Intake Air Connector Removal:





- Loosen the clamps and remove the intake air connector retaining bolts. Remove the intake air connector.
- Remove the oil filler cap.

Ignition Coil Cover Removal And Installation:





- Remove the five retaining nuts and the ignition coil cover.

Coil Pack And Bracket Removal:





- Remove the ignition coil retaining nut. Disconnect the #1 and #2 secondary ignition wires from the coil and clamp.
- Remove the ignition coil with bracket and secondary ignition wires.
- Remove the #1 and #2 secondary ignition wires from the spark plugs.
- Remove spark plugs from cylinder head.
- Install the oil filler cap.
- Install the spark plugs to the secondary ignition wire ends. Ground each spark plug.
- Disconnect the solenoid resistor and cold start injector connector.
- Crank engine and check for spark at the spark plug electrodes.
