Removal

Cylinder Head Components:





1. Disconnect cable from negative battery terminal.

(Vehicles equipped with SRS only)
CAUTION:
Work must be started approximately 90 seconds or longer from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.

2. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect throttle cable from throttle body.
3. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body.

Removal of Air Cleaner, Resonator, And Air Cleaner Hose:





4. Disconnect the following:
a. Air intake connector.
b. Cruise control actuator cable from clamp on resonator and air cleaner cap.
c. Loosen air cleaner hose clamp bolt, then disconnect four air cleaner cap clips.
d. Remove air cleaner hose from throttle body and remove air cleaner cap together with resonator and air cleaner hose.
5. Disconnect the Idle Speed Control water by-pass hose.
6. Remove two bolts, two nuts, water by-pass pipe, gasket and O-ring.
7. Disconnect following connectors from throttle body:
a. Throttle position sensor connector.
b. ISC valve connector.
8. Disconnect following hoses from top end of throttle body:

Hose Removal From Throttle Body:





a. PCV hose. (Number 1 in image)
b. Two vacuum hoses from EGR vacuum modulator. (Number 2 in image)
c. Vacuum hose from EVAP VSV. (Number 3 in image)

Removal Of Throttle Body Mounting Bolts:





9. Remove four throttle body mounting bolts.

Disconnecting Hoses From Throttle Body:





10. Disconnect following hoses from bottom end of throttle body:
a. Water by-pass hose from water outlet. (Number 1 in image)
b. Water by-pass hose from water by-pass pipe. (Number 2 in image)
c. Air hose from air tube. (Number 3 in image)
11. On California models, disconnect EGR gas temperature sensor connector, then remove two vacuum hoses from EGR VSV and vacuum hose from charcoal canister.

Removal Of EGR Components:





12. On California models, disconnect vacuum hose clamp, then loosen union nut of EGR pipe and remove two bolts, EGR valve, vacuum modulator, vacuum hoses assembly and gasket.

Disconnecting Vacuum Hoses:





13. Disconnect vacuum sensor hose and brake booster hose from intake chamber and vacuum sensing hose.
14. On models equipped with A/C, disconnect A/C magnetic clutch VSV connector.
15. On models equipped with A/C, disconnect air hose from A/C VSV.

Removal Of Air Tube:





16. Disconnect two air hoses from P/S pump.

Removal Of Three Bolts, Wire Clamp, And Air Tube:





17. Remove three bolts, wire clamp and air tube.

Disconnecting Engine Ground Wire From Intake Manifold:





18. Disconnect engine wire ground strap from intake manifold.
19. Disconnect knock sensor and EGR VSV connectors.

Removal Of Intake Manifold:





20. Remove intake manifold as follows:
a. Remove four bolts, No.1 air intake chamber and manifold stays.
b. On California models, remove wire bracket.

Removing The Six Bolts For Intake Manifold:





c. Remove six bolts, two nuts, intake manifold and gasket.

Disconnecting Two Wire Clamps:





d. Disconnect two wire clamps from wire bracket on intake manifold.
21. Check intake manifold for warpage. Maximum warpage is 0.30 mm (0.0118 in). If warpage exceeds specification, replace the manifold.
