Ignition Timing: Adjustments
Tachometer Hookup:
1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Connect a tachometer test probe to terminal IG of the check connector, Fig. 30
NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system before using it. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.
Install Jumper Wire On Service Check Connector:
3. Using a service wire, connect terminals E1 and TE1 of the check connector.
4. Check idle speed.
Idle Speed: 700 rpm
Fig. 32 Ignition Timing:
5. Using a timing light, verify that the timing mark on the timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley. Fig. 32
Ignition Timing: 10° BTDC at idle
6. If adjustment is required, loosen distributor bolt and rotate housing until timing is correct.
7. Tighten the distributor bolt and recheck the ignition timing.
8. Remove service wire.
9. Check idle advance timing with service wire removed.
Ignition Timing: 9 - 11° BTDC at idle
10.. Disconnect tachometer and timing light from engine.
