Ignition Timing: Adjustments
IGNITION TIMING:Fig. 57 Connecting Tachometer:
1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Connect tachometer test probe to negative (-) terminal of the ignition coil. Fig. 57
NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.
Fig. 58 Test Connector And Service Wire:
3. Using a service wire, connect terminals T and E1 of the check connector located near the resonator. Fig. 58
4. Check idle speed.
Idle Speed: 800 rpm
Fig. 59 Ignition Timing:
5. Using a timing light, verify that the timing mark on the timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley. Fig. 59
Ignition Timing: 10° BTDC at idle
6. If not as specified, loosen distributor hold down bolt and rotate housing until the marks align.
7. Tighten the distributor bolt and recheck the ignition timing.
8. Remove service wire.
9. Check idle advance timing with service wire removed.
Ignition timing: (M/T) more than 16° BTDC
(A/T) more than 12° BTDC
10. Disconnect tachometer and timing light from engine.
11. Check idle speed and adjust if necessary, (Refer to adjustment procedure).
