Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.2. Remove fuel tank protectors and engine undercover.
3. Drain engine oil into suitable container.
4. Drain engine coolant into suitable container.
5. Disconnect accelerator cable, cruise control cable (if equipped) and on models equipped with automatic transmission, throttle valve cable.
6. On models equipped with cruise control, disconnect cruise control vacuum hose.
7. On all models, remove battery.
8. Disconnect air flow meter wire connector.
9. Disconnect air cleaner hoses from air flow meter.
10. Remove air flow meter attaching bolts, then the air flow meter.
11. Disconnect heater hoses, then the radiator hose from coolant inlet.
12. Disconnect air bleeder hose from coolant inlet housing.
13. Disconnect fuel hose from filter, then the fuel return hose.
14. Disconnect vacuum hose from charcoal canister.
15. Disconnect engine wire and engine main wire connector, then on models equipped with manual transmission, the back-up light switch connector.
16. Disconnect speedometer cable, then remove transaxle protector (if equipped).
17. Remove ground strap from coolant inlet housing.
18. Remove coolant reservoir tank.
19. On models equipped with A/C, remove A/C compressor drive belt.
20. On all models, remove alternator belt, then disconnect radiator hose from coolant outlet.
21. Disconnect brake booster hose from intake manifold.
22. Disconnect the following wire connections:
a. Two igniter connectors.
b. Noise filter connector.
c. Engine compartment cooling fan wire connector.
d. Engine-to-body ground strap connector.
e. On models equipped with A/C, compressor clutch connector.
f. On all models, solenoid resistor connector.
23. Disconnect secondary cable from ignition coil.
24. Remove rear luggage compartment trim, then disconnect circuit opening relay connector, Electronic Control Unit (ECU) connectors, cooling fan computer connector and engine wire and engine main wire connectors. Pull wire harness into engine compartment.
25. On models equipped with A/C, remove A/C compressor without disconnecting pressure and return hoses and position aside.
26. On all models, disconnect transaxle shift linkage.
27. On models equipped with manual transmission, remove clutch slave cylinder and control bracket and position aside. Do not disconnect hydraulic hoses.
28. On all models, disconnect oil cooler hoses from oil cooler.
29. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission oil cooler lines from oil cooler.
30. On all models, remove exhaust pipe-to-exhaust manifold attaching nuts, then lower exhaust pipe.
31. Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector, then remove oxygen sensor.
32. Remove flywheel/flexplate inspection cover attaching bolts and stiffener (if equipped), then remove cover.
33. Remove right side driveshaft, then disconnect left side driveshaft from side gear shaft and wire aside. Wire shaft in such a way that inboard end is above outboard end.
34. Remove front mount through bolt, then the mount.
35. Remove rear mount through bolt, then the mount.
36. Position suitable engine lifting and support equipment under engine/transaxle assembly, then lower vehicle.
37. Remove right side mount through bolt, then the mount.
38. Remove left side mount through bolt, then slowly raise vehicle, ensuring all wires, hoses and cables are clear. Use caution not to damage throttle position sensor while raising vehicle.
39. Remove engine/transaxle assembly from under vehicle.
40. Remove cold start injector time switch connector.
41. Disconnect vacuum hoses from Bi-Metal Vacuum Switching Valves (BVSV), then remove coolant inlet housing attaching bolts and nut.
42. Disconnect hoses from coolant bypass tubes, then remove coolant inlet housing.
43. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect back-up and neutral start switch connectors and solenoid connector.
44. On models equipped with automatic transmission, rotate crankshaft as necessary to gain access to and remove six torque converter attaching bolts.
45. On all models, remove starter assembly, then separate transaxle from engine.
46. Reverse procedure to install.
