Ignition Timing: Adjustments

1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Connect a tachometer and connect the test probe to distributor terminal connector. Fig. 201

NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.

3. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor sub-diaphragm and plug the hose end. Fig. 202
4. Connect a strobe timing light and start engine.
5. Warm-up engine until coolant reaches normal operating temperature.

6. Check the ignition timing and compare with specification. Fig. 203

Ignition Timing: (M/T) 5° BTDC at max. 750 rpm
(A/T) 5° BTDC at max. 850 rpm

7. If necessary, loosen the distributor hold down bolt and rotate the distributor housing to align the marks.
8. Tighten distributor hold down bolt and recheck ignition timing.
9. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the distributor.
10. Check the idle advance ignition timing.

Ignition Timing: (M/T) 10 - 16° BTDC at max. 750 rpm
(A/T) 10 - 16° BTDC at max. 850 rpm

11. Disconnect timing light and tachometer from engine.
