Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Service and Repair
NOTE: Screws sizes in the above image are indicated by following the code below for removal and installation of the safety pad.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery cable from the negative battery terminal.
2. Remove the steering wheel.
3. (Without tilt steering) Remove seven screws and the steering column cover.
4. Remove console box.
a. Remove the shift lever knob. (M/T only)
b. Remove eight screws.
c. Remove the console box hole cover.
d. Disconnect the connectors and remove the console box.
5. Remove two screws and the glove compartment door.
6. Remove No.2 instrument panel speaker panel.
a. Remove two screws.
b. Pull loose the clips and remove the panel.
7. Remove No.1 speaker mounting bracket.
a. Remove the bolt.
b. Remove one screw or two screws (with passive radiator type speaker).
c. Disconnect the connector and remove the bracket.
8. Remove the bolt and glove box compartment door reinforcement.
9. Remove the screw from the No.1 instrument panel speaker panel. Pull loose the clips and remove the panel.
10. Remove two screws and the engine hood relase lever.
11. Remove five screws and bolt from the instrument panel finish lower panel, disconnect the connectors and remove the panel.
12. Remove the No.2 heater duct to register duct.
13. (ST model)Remove instrument panel finish lower center panel.
a. Remove the ash tray.
b. Remove eight screws.
c. Cover the shift position upper housing with a clean rag.
d. Disconnect the connectors and remove the panel.
14 (GT and GT-S models)Remove instrument panel finish lower center panel.
a. Remove the ash tray.
b. Remove six screws.
c. Cover the shift position upper housing with a clean rag.
d. Disconnect the connectors and remove the panel.
15. Remove the radio and stereo.
a. Remove four screws.
b. Disconnect the connectors and the radio antenna cable.
c. Remove the radio and the stereo.
16. Remove the rear window defogger switch and hazard switch.
17. Remove four screws and pull out the instrument cluster finish panel.
18. Remove the four screws, disconnect the connectors and remove the combination meter.
19. Remove the speedometer cable.
a. Push on the pawls on the right and left of the meter bracket.
b. Pull the meter bracket from the safety pad.
20. Remove the safety pad.
a. Remove the four heater control panel mounting screws.
b. Remove two No.1 instrument panel finish panel retainer screws.
c. Remove the cowl side trim.
d. Disconnect the three connectors shown in the illustration.
e. Remove the four bolts, two screws and two nuts.
f. The safety pad has a boss on the reverse side for clamping onto the body side. Therefore when removing, pull upward at an angle.
INSTALLATION
NOTE: Screws sizes in the above image are indicated by following the code below for installation of the safety pad.
Install safety pad parts following removal sequence in reverse.
NOTE: When reinstalling the speedometer cable, first pull on the cable guide housing.
