Disassembly Method
1. DISCONNECT BATTERY CABLE FROM NEGATIVE TERMINAL2. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER
Remove the seven screws and column cover.
3. PULL BY HAND TO REMOVE LH FRONT BODY PILLAR GARNISH
4. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL SPEAKER PANEL
(a) Remove the screw.
(b) Pull to loosen the clips and remove the panel.
5. REMOVE ENGINE HOOD RELEASE LEVER
Remove the two screws only. Do not disconnect the hood release cable.
6. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL LOWER
FINISH PANEL
(a) Remove the five screws and one bolt.
(b) Disconnect the connectors (speaker and instrument panel light control) and remove the panel.
7. PULL BY HAND TO REMOVE NO. 2 HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT
8. REMOVE REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER SWITCH AND HAZARD SWITCH
(a) Pull by hand the defogger switch and hazard switch.
(b) Disconnect the connectors and remove the switches.
9. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
Remove the four screws and gently pull out the panel.
10. REMOVE COMBINATION METER
(a) Remove the four screws.
(b) Disconnect the three connectors and remove the meter.
Note: Keep the steering column in the lowest position (w/tilt steering).
11. REMOVE SPEEDOMETER CABLE FROM SAFETY PAD
(a) Push on the pawls on the right and left of the meter bracket.
(b) Pull the meter bracket from the safety pad.
(c) Place the meter bracket on the left side temporarily.
12. REMOVE CONSOLE BOX
(a) Remove the shift lever knob. (M/T only)
(b) Remove the eight screws.
(c) Remove the console box hole cover.
(d) Disconnect the connectors and remove the console box.
(e) Disconnect parking brake switch connector.
13. REMOVE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR
Remove the two screws and door.
14. REMOVE NO. 2 INSTRUMENT PANEL SPEAKER PANEL
(a) Remove the two screws.
(b) Pull and loosen the clips and remove the panel.
15. REMOVE NO. 1 SPEAKER MOUNTING BRACKET AND GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR REINFORCEMENT AS ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the two bolts.
(b) Remove the screw.
(c) Disconnect the connector and remove the bracket and reinforcement as assembly.
16.-1 REMOVE LOWER CENTER DASH PANEL (ST)
(a) Remove the ash tray.
(b) Remove the eight screws.
IMPORTANT
(c) Cover the shift position upper housing with a clean shop rag.
(d) Disconnect the connectors and remove the panel.
16.-2 REMOVE LOWER CENTER DASH PANEL (GT, GT-S AND TURBO ALL-TRAC)
(a) Remove the ash tray.
(b) Remove the six screws.
IMPORTANT
(c) Cover the shift position upper housing with a clean shop rag.
(d) Disconnect the connectors and remove the panel.
17. REMOVE RADIO/STEREO
(a) Remove the four screws.
(b) Disconnect the connectors and radio antenna cable.
(c) Remove the radio/stereo.
Note: Turbo All-Trac radio has two antenna cables.
18. REMOVE HEATER CONTROL PANEL INSTALLING SCREW AND NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL RETAINER INSTALLING SCREW
Remove the four panel installing screws and two retainer installing screws.
19. PULL BY HAND TO REMOVE REAR NO. 1 AIR DUCT
20. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM
(a) Remove the screw and resin clip.
21. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE HARNESS (LEFT SIDE)
(a) Disconnect the three connectors shown in the illustration.
(b) Remove the resin clip of instrument panel wire harness located under the instrument panel reinforcement by using a standard tip screwdriver as shown to the left.
(1) Pulling lightly downward, Push the nail of resin clip with a standard tip screwdriver from the left side.
(2) Pulling lightly downward by hand, push the side of resin clip by a standard tip screwdriver from the right side on the reinforcement.
Note: This removal of resin clip can be difficult.
22. REMOVE RH FRONT BODY PILLAR GARNISH
Pull by hand same as the LH garnish.
Note: Do not remove pillar garnish on convertible models. Take extra care not to scratch or damage pillar garnish when removing the safety pad.
23. REMOVE SAFETY PAD
(a) Remove the four bolts, two screws and two nuts.
(b) Keep the light control switch and wiper switch on steering column in the lowest position to prevent damage.
(c) Remove the air inlet damper control cable from clamp which is located near the glovebox lamp (ST only).
(d) Disconnect the connector of A/C temperature sensor (w/ auto A/C only).
(e) The safety pad has a boss on the reverse side for clamping onto the clip on the body side. Therefore, first pull one side of safety pad until clamping is released (clicked), and then pull the other side as same.
(f) When removing the safety pad, pull upward at an angle as shown in the illustration.
24. REMOVE WIRE HARNESSES FROM THE SAFETY PAD
(a) Remove 3 screws.
(b) Pass the wire harness behind No. 1 and No. 2 dash pad braces on the right side.
25. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL CENTER REGISTER
(a) Remove the three screws of the center register and the screw of the No. 3 heater to register duct.
(b) Remove the center register.
26. GRIND INSTALLATION PORTION OF CENTER REGISTER ON REVERSE SIDE OF SAFETY PAD
(a) Use a small grinder or a gasket scraper to remove the fiberglass type material as illustrated below.
