Disassembly

1. Scribe alignment marks between differential case and cover, and record ``MD'' number and left and right clutch member markings, Fig. 37.

2. Remove case cover bolts, Fig. 38. Cover bolts are retained with thread locking compound. To aid disassembly, differential case may be heated to approximately 300°F. However, care must be taken not to overheat assembly and to ensure that assembly is heated evenly, or components will be damaged.
3. Remove case cover along with side gear assembly. Keep all components in order, Fig. 38, for reassembly. Components that are to be reused must be installed in original position.
4. Remove clutch member thrust washer, side gear, thrust washers 1 and 2, and adjusting washer from case cover.
5. Remove right clutch member and pinion assembly from differential case, noting position for installation.
6. Remove clutch member springs (4) and left clutch member.
7. Remove side gear along with clutch member thrust washer, thrust washers 1 and 2, and adjusting washer from case.

Inspection & Adjustment

1. Clean and inspect all components, and replace any that are damaged or excessively worn. If side gears and/or clutch members are replaced, contacting thrust washers must also be replaced.
2. Measure free length of clutch member springs, and spring pressure at 1.102 inch installed height.
3. Replace springs if free length is less than 1.366 inches or if pressure at installed height is less than 88.2 lbs.

5. Assemble thrust washers, side gears and clutch members on SST 09411-22011 in order shown in Fig. 41, then tighten nut on tool to seat components. Do not install adjusting washers or clutch member springs.
6. Loosen nut and allow spring tension to hold components, then measure and record dimension ``L'' with a suitable micrometer, Fig. 41. Ensure that components are properly aligned, then measure dimension ``L'' at several points and record average reading.

7. Match differential case dimension (MD code) recorded in step 1 with dimension ``L'' recorded in step 6, then select adjusting washers from charts, Fig. 42.

8. Select thrust washers that will provide 0.0012-0.0059 axial clearance in differential case, Figs. 43 and 44.
9. Remove differential components from gauge tool, keeping components in order for proper assembly.
10. Install selected adjusting washer, thrust washers 1 and 2, side gear, clutch member thrust washer and left clutch member in differential case.
11. Install selected adjusting washer, thrust washers 1 and 2, side gear and clutch member thrust washer in case cover.
12. Position right clutch member and pinions on left clutch member, assemble differential cover and case assemblies, and torque retaining bolts to 47 ft. lbs. Do not install clutch member springs.
13. Remove snap ring from side gear shaft, then rotate side gears. If gears bind or stick, repeat component inspection and adjusting washer selection.
14. When axial play has been properly adjusted, disassemble differential case.

Assembly

Coat all components with suitable limited slip differential lubricant prior to assembly.
1. Install selected adjusting washer in differential case with oil groove facing clutch plate, then thrust washers 1 and 2 and side gear.
2. Install clutch member thrust washer with oil groove facing clutch member, then the left clutch member.
3. Position pinions and clutch member springs on left member, then install right clutch member and thrust washer, with oil grooves facing clutch member.
4. Install selected adjusting washer in case cover with oil groove facing clutch, then thrust washers 1 and 2 and the side gear.
5. Position case cover assembly on differential case with matching marks aligned.
6. Apply thread locking compound to case cover bolts following manufacturer's instructions, then install bolts.
7. Torque retaining bolts to 47 ft. lbs., then ensure that side gears rotate smoothly. Tighten bolts evenly and gradually.

For removal and installation of differential carrier, and adjustment of pinion depth, backlash and preload, refer to procedure for models ``Exc. Limited Slip Differential.''

Disassembly

1. Make reference marks on left and right side differential case halves, then place right hand case in suitable vise.

Fig. 45 Exploded view of limited slip differential. Late 1986-88 Supra:

2. Loosen case halves attaching bolts a little at a time, then remove attaching bolts and separate left hand case from right hand case, Fig. 45.
3. From left hand side case, remove side gear, 5 side gear thrust washers and 4 clutch plates. Keep disassembled parts in order.
4. From right hand case, remove LH retainer, spring, spider with pinion gear, RH retainer, side gear, 5 side gear thrust washers and 4 clutch plates. Keep disassembled parts in order they were removed.

Inspection & Adjustment

1. Inspect parts for signs of damage or wear. Replace as necessary. If side gear requires replacement, replace the thrust washer that contacts it also.
2. Inspect thrust washers for damage or wear. Ensure contact surface is even with no bare metal showing.
3. Using a suitable micrometer, measure thrust washer thickness. If less than .0685 (1.74 mm), replace thrust washers. If thrust washers require replacement, replace clutch plate that contacts thrust washer.

Fig. 44 Measuring Dimension ``A''in Righthand Case. Supra w/limited Slip Differential:

4. Check clutch plates for wear or damage and replace as necessary. These differentials may be assembled with either of two type clutch plates, Fig. 46. If clutch plates require replacement, they must be replaced with the same type that was removed.
5. Measure spring free length. Spring should be 1.232 inch (31.3 mm).

Fig. 47 Measuring dimension "B" to determine side gear bearing shim pack. Late 1986-88 Supra w/limited slip differential:

6. Measure and record right side case dimension ``A'', Fig. 47, then determine required side bearing shim thickness as follows:
a. Assemble thrust washers and clutch plates on side gear. Do not assemble side gear shims at this time.

Fig. 43 Clutch Plate Identification. Supra w/limited Slip Differential:

b. Using tool No. 09726-35010, apply approximately 22 lbs. of pressure to thrust washer and clutch pack while measuring dimension ``B'', Fig. 48.
c. To determine side bearing shim thickness ``C'', use the following formula: ``C''=``A'' - ``B'' - .6358 inch (16.15 mm).

Fig. 49 Adjusting shim selection chart. Late 1986-88 Supra w/limited slip differential:

Fig. 50 Adjusting shim sizes. Late 1986-88 Supra w/limited slip differential:

d. Refer to Figs. 49 and 50, to select proper shims.
e. Install selected shim(s) between outer thrust washer and case.
7. Determine side bearing shim thickness for left side case by following procedures in step 6, above.

Assembly

1. Lubricate all components with limited slip differential lubricant.
2. Into right hand case, install adjusting shim, thrust washers and clutch plates. Install thrust washer without oil groove on outer side so it makes contact with the side of the case with no oil groove.
3. Into left hand case, install adjusting shim, thrust washers and clutch plates. Install thrust washer without oil groove on outer side so it makes contact with the side of the case with no oil groove.
4. Install pinion gears and washers to spider, then align RH retainer holes with spider lock pins and install retainer.
5. Install spider, pinion, washers and RH retainer assembly to right hand case.
6. Secure side gear, then measure backlash while pushing on spider retainer. Backlash should be .002-.0079 inch (.05-.20 mm). If not within specifications, select suitable adjusting shim.
7. Measure backlash in left side case as outlined in step 6.
8. Install spring and LH retainer in spider.
9. Align reference marks, then install left hand case on right hand case.
10. Lightly oil attaching bolts, then install bolts and tighten evenly and gradually. When snug, torque to 35 ft. lbs.
