Upper Control Arm
With Independent Rear SuspensionRemoval
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove brake caliper from axle carrier and suspend with wire.
3. Remove brake disc, then install suitable dial indicator and measure axial hub bearing play. If play is within .002 inch play is satisfactory. If play exceeds .002 inch, disassemble and inspect axle hub.
4. Check axle flange runout. If runout exceeds .002 inch, replace axle shaft.
5. Remove axle shaft. Refer to ``Axle Shaft Service'' for procedure.
6. Remove parking brake assembly.

7. Remove No. 1 lower suspension arm attaching nut from axle carrier, then using suitable puller, disconnect suspension arm, Fig. 10,
8. Disconnect No. 2 lower suspension arm and strut rod from axle carrier.
9. Disconnect shock absorber from axle carrier.
10. Disconnect upper control arm from body, then remove axle carrier and upper control arm as an assembly.
11. Remove upper arm-to-axle carrier attaching nut, then separate components.
12. Remove brake backing plate from axle carrier.
Inspection
1. Flip ball joint stud back and forth five times, then install nut.
2. Using torque wrench, turn nut continuously one turn each 2-4 seconds and take torque reading on fifth turn.
3. If turning torque is not 9-30 inch lbs., replace upper control arm.
Installation
1. Install upper control arm to body. Do not tighten attaching nuts at this time.
2. Install axle carrier on upper control arm and install new nut. Do not tighten at this time.
3. Install No. 1 suspension arm on axle carrier. Torque attaching nut to 43 ft. lbs.
4. Install No. 2 suspension arm on axle carrier. Do not tighten attaching nut at this time.
5. Install strut rod on axle carrier. Do not tighten attaching nut at this time.
6. Torque upper control arm-to-axle carrier attaching nut to 80 ft. lbs.
7. Install shock absorber on axle carrier. Torque attaching nut to 100 ft. lbs.
8. Install parking brake assembly and brake disc.
9. Install axle shaft. Refer to ``Axle Shaft Service'' for procedure.
10. Install brake caliper. Torque attaching bolts to 34 ft. lbs.
11. Lower vehicle to ground, then bounce vehicle up and down several times to stabilize suspension.
12. With vehicle weight on suspension, torque upper control arm-to-body attaching nuts, No. 2 lower suspension arm-to-axle carrier attaching nut and strut rod-to-axle carrier attaching nut to 120 ft. lbs.
