Brake Rotor/Disc: Service and Repair

Pads, Replace

1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. Temporarily install rotor disc with wheel attaching nuts.
3. Remove two caliper attaching bolts, then the caliper assembly, Fig. 22. Do not allow caliper to hang unsupported or damage to the brake hose may occur.
4. Remove pads, anti-squeal shims and pad support plates.
5. Reverse procedure to install. Torque caliper attaching bolt to 18 ft. lbs.

Caliper, Replace

1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. Disconnect brake hose from brake tube and caliper using a suitable tool.
3. Remove caliper attaching bolts, then the caliper, Fig. 22.
4. Remove anti-squeal shims, brake pads with pad wear indicator, and pad support plates.
5. Reverse procedure to install, then bleed brake system.

Caliper Overhaul

1. Remove sliding bushing and boot, Fig. 22.
2. Remove piston using compressed air. When using air pressure to remove caliper piston, place a shop towel over piston to prevent it from flying out.
3. Remove caliper boot and piston seal from caliper.
4. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Apply suitable grease to the sliding bushing and dust boot, piston seal and piston and caliper dust boot.
b. Ensure dust boot does not fold under during installation.

Parking Brake Shoes, Replace

1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. Remove rear caliper, refer to "Caliper, Replace" procedure.

3. Remove rotor disc, Fig. 23.
4. Remove shoe return springs using a suitable tool, then the shoe strut and spring.
5. Slide out front shoe, then remove shoe adjusting screw.
6. Remove tension spring and front shoe.
7. Slide out rear shoe, then disconnect parking brake cable from parking brake shoe lever.
8. Measure brake drum inside diameter. Maximum inside diameter should be 6.61 inch.
9. Measure brake shoe lining thickness. Minimum thickness should be .039 inch. If lining is less than minimum, replace brake shoes.

10. Measure clearance between parking brake shoe and lever, Fig. 24. If clearance is greater than .0138 inch, replace shim to obtain correct clearance.
11. Apply suitable grease to the backing plate, adjusting screw and sliding surfaces of the shoe.
12. Install parking brake lever to the cable.
13. Install rear shoe, tension spring, front shoe and shoe adjusting screw.
14. Install front shoe and return spring using a suitable tool.
15. Install strut and spring, then the rear shoe return spring using a suitable tool.
16. Install rotor disc, aligning groove on rear axle shaft flange and service hole on the disc, then temporarily install hub nuts.
17. Turn adjuster and expand shoes until rotor disc locks, then return adjuster eight notches.
18. Install caliper assembly and rear wheel.
