Brake Rotor/Disc: Service and Repair
Pads, Replace
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. Temporarily install rotor disc with wheel attaching nuts.
3. Remove clip, cotter pin and hole pin, then pull out cable from parking brake cable bracket.

4. Remove bottom caliper attaching bolt, then lift caliper assembly, Fig. 19. Do not remove caliper from main pin.
5. Remove brake pads, anti-squeal shims, anti-rattle springs, pad support plate and pad guide plate.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Using a suitable tool, slowly turn and push piston clockwise until it locks in the bore.

b. Install inboard pad as shown in Fig. 20.
c. Torque caliper attaching bolt to 14 ft. lbs.
d. Adjust parking brake automatic adjuster by fully pulling and releasing parking brake lever.
Caliper, Replace
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. Disconnect brake hose from brake tube and caliper using a suitable tool.
3. Remove brake pads, refer to "Pads, Replace" procedure.
4. Remove main pin boot, then lift and push out caliper from main pin.
5. Reverse procedure to install, then bleed brake system.
Rotor Disc, Replace
1. Remove caliper as described under "Caliper, Replace" procedure.
2. Remove caliper mounting bracket.
3. Lift off rotor disc.

Caliper Overhaul
1. Remove sliding bushing and boot, Fig. 19.
2. Remove caliper boot set ring and caliper boot using a suitable screwdriver.
3. Turn piston counterclockwise using a suitable tool, then remove piston from bore.
4. Remove piston seal from cylinder using a suitable screwdriver.
5. Install tool No. 09756-00010 (or equivalent) over adjusting nut, then tighten nut using a 14 mm socket. Use caution not to over tighten tool. Ensure tool No. 09756-00010 (or equivalent) is used to prevent possibility of the spring flying out, causing injury or damage to the interior surface of the cylinder.
6. Remove snap ring from cylinder bore, then tool No. 09756-00010 or equivalent.
7. Remove spring retainer, spring, spring plate and stopper together with adjusting bolt. Use caution not to damage O-ring.
8. Remove strut, then the torsion spring from parking brake crank.
9. Remove parking brake crank from caliper. Do not disassemble crank subassembly. Lever is pressure fitted to pin and should not be removed.
10. Remove parking brake crank boot using a suitable screwdriver, if necessary.
11. Apply suitable grease to all moving parts.
12. Install parking brake crank boot in caliper, if removed.
13. Install parking brake crank in caliper. Match crank boot with groove in crank seal.
14. Install torsion spring, then ensure parking brake crank subassembly does not touch stopper pin.
Fig. 21 Adjusting cable support bracket clearance. Corolla RWD:
15. Measure clearance of cable support bracket as shown in Fig. 21. If clearance is not .0197-.0275 inch (.5-.7 mm), adjust clearance with the cable support bracket attaching bolt.
16. Adjust rollers of the needle roller bearing so they do not catch on the cylinder hole, then install strut.
17. Install O-ring to adjusting bolt.
18. Assemble stopper, washer, spring and spring case to the adjusting bolt, then using tool No. 09756-00010 or equivalent, hand tighten adjusting bolt subassembly. Ensure inscribed surface of stopper faces up. Also ensure notches of spring case align with notches of the stopper.
19. Install adjusting bolt subassembly in the caliper, then the snap ring with opening toward bleeder.
20. Remove tool No. 09756-00010 or equivalent, then ensure adjusting bolt is in proper position.
21. Move parking brake crank by hand and ensure adjusting bolt moves smoothly.
22. Install piston seal in caliper.
23. Using a suitable tool, slowly turn and push piston clockwise until it locks in the bore.
24. Align center of piston stopper grove with the positioning protrusion of the caliper.
25. Install caliper boot and set ring in caliper.
26. Install dust boot and sliding bushing. Ensure dust boot does not fold under during installation.
