Engine: Service and Repair


Rear Wheel Drive Models

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove engine hood and under cover (if equipped).
2. Remove air cleaner hose, then disconnect actuator and accelerator cable from bracket.
3. Remove console and shift lever.
4. Drain engine and transmission oil, then disconnect two oil cooler hoses.
5. Drain coolant from radiator, then remove two heater hoses.
6. Disconnect coolant reservoir hose, then the two radiator hoses from engine.
7. Remove radiator attaching bolts, then the radiator and fan shroud as an assembly.
8. Remove air cleaner assembly.
9. On models equipped with power steering, remove power steering pump and bracket and position aside. Do not disconnect power steering pump hoses.
10. On all models, remove water pump drive belt, fluid coupling with fan and water pump pulley.
11. On models equipped with A/C, remove A/C compressor and bracket and position aside. Do not disconnect refrigerant lines.
12. Disconnect coil wire and spark plug wires cylinder head, then remove distributor attaching bolts and distributor.
13. Remove exhaust pipe bracket attaching bolts, then the exhaust pipe bracket.
14. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
15. Disconnect starter motor electrical connectors.
16. Remove fuel hoses from pulsation damper and pressure regulator.
17. Remove cold start injector pipe, then the PCV hose from intake manifold.
18. Mark and disconnect all necessary engine vacuum hoses, then remove wire harness and vacuum pipe from timing cover.
19. Mark and disconnect all engine electrical connectors.
20. Raise and support vehicle.
21. Remove engine mount attaching bolt from each side of engine.
22. Remove clutch release cylinder, then the propeller shaft.
23. Disconnect speedometer cable, then the back-up light switch electrical connector.
24. Disconnect grounding cables from clutch housing and extension housing.
25. Lower vehicle, then attach suitable hoist to engine lift brackets.
26. Support rear of engine using a suitable jack, then remove four rear engine mount attaching bolts.
27. Remove engine and transmission from vehicle as an assembly.
28. Separate engine from transmission.
29. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque rear engine mount attaching bolts to 38 ft. lbs.
b. Torque clutch release cylinder attaching bolts to 13 ft. lbs.
c. Torque A/C compressor and power steering pump brackets to 29 ft. lbs.
d. Torque exhaust manifold attaching nuts and bolts to 18 ft. lbs.
e. Torque pulsation damper to 22 ft. lbs.
f. Torque cold start injector pipe to 13 ft. lbs.
