Timing Belt Installation
INSTALLATION OF TIMING BELT
1. Install camshaft timing pulley.
(a) Align the camshaft knock pin and camshaft timing pulley.
(b) Secure the camshaft and tighten the camshaft timing pulley bolt.
Torque: 600 kg-cm (43 ft-lb 59 N.m)
(c) Align the bearing cap mark and the center of the small hole on the camshaft timing pulley.
NOTE: Remove any oil or water on the camshaft timing pulley and keep it clean.
2. Install crankshaft timing pulley.
Install the crankshaft timing pulley and align the TDC marks on the oil pump body and crankshaft timing pulley.
NOTE: Remove any oil or water on the crankshaft timing pulley and keep it clean.
3. Install timing belt idler pulley.
(a) Temporarily install the timing belt idler pulley with the mount bolt.
(b) Install the tension spring.
(c) Pry the timing belt idler pulley toward the left as far as it will go and temporarily tighten it.
NOTE: Remove any oil or water on the idler pulley and keep it clean.
4. Install the timing belt.
NOTE: If reusing the timing belt, align the points marked during removal and install the belt with the arrow pointing in the direction of engine revolution.
5. Check valve timing and timing belt tension.
(a) Loosen the timing belt idler pulley mount bolt.
(b) Temporarily install the crank pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft two revolutions from TDC to TDC
NOTE: Always turn the crankshaft clockwise.
(c) Check the valve timing.
Insure that each pulley aligns with the marks as shown in the figure.
(d) Tighten the timing belt idler pulley mount bolt.
Torque: 375 kg-cm (27 ft-lb., 37 N.m)
(e) Remove the temporarily installed crank pulley bolt.
(f) (Reference) Measure the timing belt deflection as shown in the figure.
If the measured value is not within standard, readjust with the idler pulley.
Timing belt deflection: 5 - 6 mm ( 0.20 - 0.24 in.) at 2 kg (4.4 lb, 20 N)
6. Install timing belt guide.
Install the guide, facing the cup side outward.
7. Install timing belt covers.
8. Install crankshaft pulley.
(a) Apply a light coating of engine oil on the threads and heads under of the pulley set bolt.
(b) Align the pulley set key with the key groove of the pulley and install.
(c) Using SST 09213-14010 and 09330-00021, install and torque the mount bolt.
Torque: 1,200 kg-cm (87 ft-lb, 118 N.m)
9. Temporarily install water pump pulley.
10. Install RH engine mounting insulator.
(a) Install the RH mounting insulator to the engine mounting bracket with the two nuts and bolt.
Align the RH mounting insulator with the body bracket and install the mounting through bolt and nut.
Torque:
Bolt 650 kg-cm (47 ft-lb, 64 N.m)
Nut 530 kg-cm (38 ft-lb, 52 N.m)
Through bolt 890 kg-cm (64 ft-lb, 87 N.m)
(b) Install the RH mounting stay with the three bolts, remove the jack.
Torque: 430 kg-cm (31 ft-lb, 42 N.m)
11. Install cylinder head cover with gasket.
(a) Apply seal packing to as shown in the figure.
Seal packing: Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent
NOTE: Clean the indicated portions by removing the original sealant before recoating.
(b) Install the cylinder head cover with the three grommets and bolts.
(c) Install the PCV hose.
12. Install spark plugs.
(a) Using a plug wrench (16 mm), install the spark plugs.
Torque: 180 kg-cm (13 ft-lb, 18 N.m)
(b) Connect the high-tension cords to spark plugs.
13. Install vane pump drive belt.
14. Install bracket, A/C compressor and drive belt.
15. Install alternator drive belt.
16. Adjust drive belts.
Using a belt tension gauge, check the drive belt tension.
Drive belt tension:
Alternator
New belt 160 ± 20 lb
Used belt 130 ± 20 lb
PS Belt
New belt 125 ± 25 lb
Used belt 80 ± 20 lb
A/C Belt
New belt 160 ± 20 lb
Used belt 100 ± 20 lb
If necessary, adjust the drive belt tension.
17. Tighten water pump pulley bolts.
18. Install air cleaner.
19. Install RH under cover.
20. Install RH wheel.
