Engine: Service and Repair


1. Remove hood, then drain cooling system.
2. Remove battery.
3. Disconnect ignition coil connector and ignition coil wire from coil, then remove upper suspension brace attaching bolts and nuts and brace.
4. On automatic transmission models, disconnect throttle cable and bracket from throttle body.
5. Disconnect throttle cable and bracket from throttle body, then remove radiator reservoir tank.
6. Remove cruise control actuator with bracket as follows:
a. Disconnect ground strap connector.
b. Remove actuator cover, then disconnect vacuum hose.
c. Disconnect actuator connector, then remove actuator with bracket.
7. Remove oxygen sensor, then the radiator.
8. Remove air cleaner assembly, air flow meter, air cleaner hose, then the air cleaner bracket.
9. Remove igniter, then disconnect heater hoses.
10. Disconnect and plug fuel inlet hose from filter and return hose from fuel return pipe.
11. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
12. On models with manual transaxle, remove clutch release cylinder and hose bracket. Do not disconnect clutch release cylinder lines.
13. On models with manual transaxle, disconnect transaxle control cable as follows:
a. Remove clips and plate washers, then disconnect each control cable from shift and selector levers.
b. Remove clips, then disconnect each cable from control bracket.
14. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect transaxle control cable as follows:
a. Remove retaining clip, then disconnect control cable from swivel.
b. Remove retaining clip, then disconnect control cable from bracket.
15. On all models, remove A/C compressor from engine and position aside. Do not disconnect hoses.
16. Disconnect check connector, then the ground straps from LH fender apron. Disconnect No. 2 junction block.
17. Disconnect vacuum hoses from brake booster, A/C idle-up and charcoal canister.
18. Raise and support vehicle, then drain engine oil.
19. Remove RH engine under cover, then the lower suspension crossmember.
20. Remove both driveshafts, then the power steering pump and position aside. Do not disconnect power steering pump hoses.
21. On 3S-GE engine, disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. On 3S-FE engine, disconnect exhaust pipe from catalytic converter. On both engines, remove engine rear mount bolt.
22. Lower vehicle.
23. Pull TCCS ESU connectors into engine compartment, then disconnect the connectors.
24. Remove engine front mount bolts, then the power steering pump reservoir mount bolts.
25. Attach suitable engine lifting equipment to engine.
26. Remove RH and LH mount through bolts, then remove LH mount bracket from transaxle.
27. Remove engine and transaxle from vehicle.
28. Reverse procedure to install.
