Instruments - Buzzing Noise From Dash Panel

REFERENCE ELECTRICAL NUMBER 018 DATE 07-18-86
MODEL SV (with cruise control)
Condition: A buzzing noise emitted from the right side dash panel during various modes of normal operation.

Cause: From January 1986 production, Camry models equipped with cruise control were fitted with an additional vacuum switch mounted next to the A/C VSV on the right engine side firewall. This switch was added to accomodate an added vacuum pump for improved cruise control performance. When a negative pressure of about 6 inches of mercury is applied to the vacuum switch, a chattering noise/vibration is set up which is transmitted through the firewall, creating the buzzing noise.

VACUUM SWITCH:

Correction: To eliminate the buzzing noise, the vacuum switch (P/N 83391-22040) and vacuum switch bracket (P/N 88292-32010) can be re-located to the power steering tube bracket which is located near the right side suspension tower as shown below:
NOTE: Make sure that the vacuum switch bracket contacts a good ground.

ORIGINAL LOCATION OF VACUUM SWITCH:

Original location of vacuum switch and bracket, mounted on the right side engine compartment firewall.

NEW LOCATION OF VACUUM SWITCH:

Recommended new location of vacuum switch and bracket. Mount on the rear side of the right suspension tower to the power steering tube bracket.
