W/4A-C Engines


1. Disconnect battery ground and positive cables, then remove battery, battery carrier and engine compartment hood.
2. 320 Remove air cleaner assembly, then drain coolant from radiator and engine block.
3. On vehicle equipped with air conditioning, remove fan shroud.
4. Disconnect radiator hoses from engine and remove radiator from vehicle.
5. On vehicles equipped with power steering, remove power steering pump drive belt, mounting bolts and power steering pump. Position pump aside.
6. On vehicles, equipped with air conditioning, remove compressor drive belt, mounting bolts, then position compressor aside. Do not disconnect air conditioner compressor hoses.
7. Remove cooling fan, fan pulley and drive belt.
8. Disconnect heater inlet hose, brake booster hose, fuel lines from fuel pump, canister hose, vacuum switching valve hose and emission control vacuum hoses. Prior to removing vacuum hoses, identify them so they can be returned to their original locations.
9. Disconnect wire from carburetor, ground strap, water temperature sending unit wire, thermo sensor wire and Cold Mixture Heater (CMH) wire.
10. Disconnect heater outlet hose, oil pressure switch electrical connector, starter wire for terminals 30 and 50, engine ground strap, alternator electrical connectors and distributor wire.
11. Disconnect engine electrical harness from engine block and position aside.
12. Disconnect electrical connectors from emission control valve assembly and position aside.
13. Disconnect electrical connector from oxygen sensor.
14. Disconnect hose, if equipped from air suction valve.
15. Disconnect transmission throttle valve cable.
16. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, remove shift lever.
17. Raise and support vehicle.
18. Drain oil from engine.
19. Remove exhaust front pipe clamp. Disconnect and remove exhaust front pipe from exhaust manifold and catalytic converter.
20. If equipped, remove power steering gear housing.
21. Remove driveshaft from transmission. Insert tool number 09325-12010 or equivalent into transmission output shaft to prevent oil leakage.
22. Disconnect speedometer cable from transmission.
23. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, disconnect electrical connector from back-up light switch.
24. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, remove clutch slave cylinder.
25. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect two oil cooler lines.
26. Position a suitable jack under transmission. Position a wooden block between jack and transmission pan to prevent damage of transmission.
27. Remove rear engine mounts and ground strap.
28. Remove engine mount bolts.
29. Using a suitable hoist, remove engine and transmission assembly from vehicle. If vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, use care not to damage condenser when lifting engine and transmission assembly from vehicle.
30. Separate engine from transmission assembly.
31. Reverse procedure to install. Torque rear engine mounts to 14-22 ft. lbs. on 1982-84 models or 38 ft. lbs. on all other models. Torque transmission mounting bolts to 37-57 ft. lbs. Be sure to remove tool previously installed onto transmission output shaft.
