SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
1. SRS (SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM) AIRBAG SYSTEM
a. General Description
1. The SRS airbag system consists of the airbags and main components:
2. AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT
a. Frontal Collisions
1. The driver and front passenger airbags are in case of frontal collisions. These airbags by dual stage control. In order to activate dual stage control, the airbag sensor assembly center monitors the following information through the components shown in the table:
b. Side Collisions
1. The side and curtain shield airbags are in case of side collisions. The side airbags are installed in the seat backs of the driver seat and the front passenger seat, and the curtain shield airbags are installed in the upper areas of the right and left center pillars.
If a side airbag sensor detects an impact, the airbag sensor assembly center causes the side and curtain shield airbags to be deployed simultaneously.
c. Rear Side Collisions
1. The curtain shield airbags are in case of rear side collisions. The curtain shield airbags are installed in the upper areas of the right and left center pillars. If a curtain shield airbag sensor detects an impact, the airbag sensor assembly center causes a curtain shield airbag to be deployed.
3. FRONT PASSENGER OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM
a. General Description
1. The front passenger occupant classification system determines whether the front passenger seat is occupied by an adult or child (with child seat) or is unoccupied, based on the load that is applied to the front passenger seat and whether the seat belt is buckled. The system restricts the deployment of the front passenger airbag, front passenger side airbag, and the front passenger seat belt pre-tensioner in accordance with this judgement. The result is informed to the driver through the airbag ON/OFF indicator illumination.
b. System Configuration
1. This system consists of the occupant classification ECU, occupant classification sensors, airbag ON/OFF indicator, seat belt buckle switches, and airbag sensor assembly center.
c. Occupant Classification ECU and Sensor
1. The occupant classification sensors are installed on four brackets connecting the seat rail and the seat frame. The resistance values of these sensors, which vary in accordance with the load that acts on the brackets, are transmitted to the occupant classification ECU as signals. Upon receipt of the signals, the ECU determines the front passenger seat occupant conditions.
