Removal and Replacement
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSY (A340E)
COMPONENTS
REPLACEMENT
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
2. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT ASSY (REGULAR CAB)
3. REMOVE PROPELLER W/ CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSY (EXCEPT REGULAR CAB)
4. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID
a. Remove the drain plug, gasket and drain ATF.
b. Install a new gasket and drain plug.
Torque: 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)
5. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL GAGE SUB-ASSY
6. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSY
a. Remove the 2 bolts and oil filler tube.
7. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE NO.1
a. Remove the 3 bolts and 3 clamps.
b. Using SST, disconnect the oil cooler outlet tube No.1.

8. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER INLET TUBE NO.1
a. Using SST, disconnect the oil cooler inlet tube No.1.

9. REMOVE MANIFOLD STAY
a. Remove the 3 bolts and manifold stay.
10. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSY
a. CABLE TYPE:
(1) Remove the nut and disconnect the transmission control cable.
(2) Remove the clip and disconnect the transmission control cable.
11. SEPARATE FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSY
a. ROD TYPE:
(1) Remove the clip and separate the floor shift gear shifting rod from the automatic transmission.
12. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSY
a. Support the automatic transmission assy with a transmission jack.
13. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACKET
a. Remove the 8 bolts and 2 front suspension member brackets.
14. REMOVE FRAME CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSY NO.3
a. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector.
b. Remove the 4 bolts from the frame crossmember sub-assembly No.3.
c. Remove the 4 nuts, 4 bolts and frame crossmember sub-assembly No.3.
15. REMOVE STARTER ASSY
16. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR
a. Tilt down the transmission.
NOTICE: Take care so that the cooling fan does not come in contact with the fan shroud.
b. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
c. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
d. Disconnect the 2 speed sensor connectors.
e. Disconnect the temperature sensor connector.
17. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS
18. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSY
a. Remove flywheel housing dust seal.
b. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.
c. Hold the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench and remove the 6 bolts.
d. Remove the 7 bolts.
e. Separate and remove the automatic transmission.
19. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET NO.1
a. Remove the 2 bolts and transmission control cable bracket No.1.
20. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR REAR NO.1
a. Remove the 4 bolts and engine mounting insulator rear No.1.
21. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY
22. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY
SST 09350-32014 (09351-32020)
23. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY
a. Install the torque converter clutch onto the automatic transmission.
b. Using calipers and a straight edge, measure dimension A, between the transmission and the end surface of the drive plate, as shown in the illustration.
Standard: A: 22.28 mm (0.8772 inch)
c. Using calipers and a straight edge, measure the dimension B shown in the illustration and check that B is greater than A measured in (b).
Standard: A + 1 mm (0.03937 inch) or more
24. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR REAR NO.1
a. Install the engine mounting insulator with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 65 Nm (663 kgf-cm, 48 ft. lbs.)
25. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET NO.1
a. Install the transmission control cable bracket No.1 with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 28 Nm (286 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.)
26. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSY
a. Install the automatic transmission with the 7 bolts.
Torque:
71 Nm (724 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.) for bolt A
37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.) for bolt B
b. Install the 6 torque converter clutch mounting bolts.
Torque: 48 Nm (489 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.)
HINT: First install the black bolt and then the other 5 bolts.
c. Install the flywheel housing under cover.
27. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS
28. INSTALL STARTER ASSY
29. INSTALL FRAME CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSY NO.3
a. Install the frame crossmember sub-assembly No.3 with the 4 bolts and 4 nuts.
Torque: 40 Nm (408 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the frame crossmember sub-assembly No.3 with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 19 Nm (189 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.)
c. Connect the heated oxygen sensor connector.
30. INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACKET
a. Install the 2 front suspension member brackets with the 8 bolts.
Torque: 33 Nm (336 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.)
31. INSTALL FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSY
a. ROD TYPE:
(1) Install the floor shift gear shifting rod, then install the clip.
32. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSY
a. CABLE TYPE:
(1) Connect the transmission control cable with the clip.
(2) Connect the transmission control cable with the nut.
Torque: 14 Nm (143 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)
33. INSTALL MANIFOLD STAY
a. Install the manifold stay with the 3 bolts.
Torque:
71 Nm (724 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.) for bolt A
44 Nm (449 kgf-cm, 33 ft. lbs.) for bolt B
30 Nm (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) for bolt C
34. INSTALL OIL COOLER INLET TUBE NO.1
a. Provisionally install the oil cooler inlet tube No.1.
b. Provisionally install the oil cooler outlet tube No.1.
c. Install the 3 clamps and 3 bolts.
Torque:
12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 8.9 ft. lbs.) for bolt A
5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 in ft. lbs.) for bolt B
d. Using SST, tighten the oil cooler inlet tube No.1.

Torque: 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.)
35. INSTALL OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE NO.1
a. Using SST, tighten the oil cooler outlet tube No.1.

Torque: 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.)
36. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSY
a. Coat new O-ring with ATF and install it onto the oil filler tube.
b. Install the oil filler tube with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 8.9 ft. lbs.)
37. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL GAGE SUB-ASSY
38. INSTALL PROPELLER W/CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSY (EXCEPT REGULAR CAB)
39. INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT ASSY (REGULAR CAB)
40. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION
41. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
Torque: 3.9 Nm (40 kgf-cm, 35 inch lbs.)
42. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID
43. INSPECT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID
44. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION
