Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection
1. Warm up engine.Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.
2. Connect hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool or equivalent.
(a) Connect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool or equivalent to the Data Link Connector (DLC)3.
(b) Please refer to the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool or equivalent operator's manual for further details.
3. Inspect ignition timing.
(a) Using Special Service Tool (SST) Diagnosis Check Wire # 09843 - 18020 or equivalent, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the DLC1.
NOTE: After engine speed is kept at about 1,000 rpm for 5 seconds, check that it returns to idle speed.
(b) Using a timing light, connect the test probe to the No. 1 high-tension cord.
(c) Check the ignition timing.
Ignition timing: 3° - 7° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) @ idle.
(d) Remove the SST from the DLC1.
4. Further check ignition timing.
Check that the ignition timing advances.
Ignition timing: 7° - 18° BTDC @ idle.
NOTE: The timing mark moves in a range between 7° and 18°.
5. Disconnect hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool or equivalent, and timing light.
